which is better a matching large right side air scoop or the factory right side air scoop. Are there any advantages of one over the other. Has anyone seen any improvements using a rss. |

Large RSS is better. Engine will run cooler; even if your leg says otherwise. On Ulysses model the fan runs much less. |

I have one from pegasus customizing ,it's equal to the one on the left side. very nice made and good quality! http://badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/4 47504.html?1238611814 The fan has a much easier life now! |

I would choose the factory scoop. One of the reasons it was not one on the bike in the first place is because of air flow - if both sides create the same airflow, it could pocket behind the engine. I'd trust that the factory RSS keeps this in mind. |

I changed to the large one and my bike runs cooler. I think it is an improvement regardless of it not being a factory idea until late. |

Remember on Uly's Buell released a new design in 2010 and as a "comfort kit" that included replacing the tiny stock RSS with a much larger one. Not quite the same size but close. |

Take a look at the great big hole at the back where the fan sits. This is there to let the hot air out the back (assisted by the fan). A large right side scoop not only means the fan runs up to 40% less (which means the motor is running cooler), but you will also notice a cooler ride on that side. |

Some testing I did in '07 and some interesting insights. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/224426.html |

> Not a chance. Take a look at the great big hole at the back where the fan sits... All I know is what was discussed here a few years back. I could fall either way on the subject, and I could just as easily now believe that a right side scoop was thrown out by the mothership design department because it'd not let enough engine show (that's why the 1125 had radiator pods instead of a full fairing). |

When I changed my spark plugs on my XB12SS, the rear plug was significantly more burned and fouled than the front plug. That was when I was running the factory RSS. Not sure if the 2 things are related. But I am inclined to believe the rear cylinder doesn't recieve as much air flow, runs hotter, and therefore burns the spark plug more than the front. When I changed the plugs, I installed a larger RSS. It funnels a much larger volume of air to the rear cylinder. It will be intersing to see how the spark plugs compare in a couple thousand miles. When I put a factory RSS on my 2004 Lightning, it made a difference. When I changed to Amsoil, it made a bigger difference. |

I remember I found a subject on that in the days I had my XB. (2006-2007) Dont remember where I found it since its some years now. But with a larger right side airscope the cylinders will run cooler, but the heads will get hotter, and that is the reason the xb's come with the smaller rightside scope. I found a video demonstrating that and they mesured the heat. But that is now several years ago... |

To the OP's "Has anyone seen any improvements using a rss." That depends. I'm only one data point. AFV increased 5%. Miles per gallon decreased by the same, maybe more. Miles traveled after cold startup to reach 270F went from 10 to 15 miles. Fan never runs. |

Before Amsoil, I ran Mobil-1 V-twin oil. After riding from my shop to my house, approx 6 miles with no stops, when I turned the engine off, the fan would come on, even with the RSS. After changing to Amsoil, I can ride from my shop to my normal meetup ride place, about 15 miles, and the fan does not come on when I shut off the engine. |

+ 1 on the Amsoil. My bike changed its whole character VS when it had conventional oil. Runs cooler and smoother. The modification that most affected how frequently and when my fan runs is my EBR ECM. Even when I had conventional oil, and the OEM RSS, the EBR ECM changed the whole chracter of the fan. Mainly, it made it run MUCH less frequently, while the bike was in motion, usually while cruising, and it turns off when I stop and turn off my bike. Which is cool b/c the fan screaming after the bike is off, would attract furrowed brows and "What is that?" questions. No longer. (Message edited by gregoxb on April 25, 2013) |

I think I'm either going to go with the small profile factory scoop or the Uly factory scoop. Which is better? does anyone have any pics of them. I've seen a few pics of the Uly RSS and from what I can tell it looks kind of funny. |

The small profile scoop is OEM on the 2010 XB models, so just google a pic of that. How they look on the bike is a matter of opinion. Which funnels more air? The larger scoop gets my vote. |

I want the RSS, but need some piping to get it behind the fairing. Sharskinz keeps things hot. |

Is the 2010 xb12s right side air scoop still available? |

I just ordered a "factory" comfort kit that comes with a RSS fight side scoop. My cooling fan just took a dump and is being replaced as soon and the part arrives. Hope the comfort kit takes a load off the fan. The bike only has 10k on it 07 model XB12 |

Is it the same on on American Sport Bike? The large RSS? And does anyone know if it would be of any benefit under Sharkskinz full fairing? |
