question, what do you guys think a 2000 m2 with a d and d pipe, yost power tube master kit, and k and n air filter hp wise should make? mine was dynoed at 74.8 hp and 77 ft/lbs of tourque. is this about right? |

Yes, although with careful tuning you might get it higher. |

Donn, Any success on getting Stainless or the other bender to produce a race header? I might be in the market for one and would love to save a little $$ if possible. Carl |

Hello Carl, I am working on a complete system: Race style header for use with for the SS muffler with redesigned front and rear brackets, done by our resident Mechanical Design Engineer Al Lighton. I have couple race muff prototypes for the over the frame exhaust bikes and hope to have some for sale in the next month or so. The price will be smoking cheap. |

Ok... I would like some exhaust recomemdations. I am ready to add an aftermaket slip on for my 2000 M2. My top candidate is probably the updated supertrapp, with my second choice being the White Brothers. My main concern at this point is noise. I don't mind a deeper note, or some extra noise at high revs, but at cruise around the neighborhood or down the interstate low RPM I don't want this thing to be disruptive, either to me or to my neighbors. I guess I expect some performance bump from the better muffler, and am probably more interested in midrange then top end. I like the supertrapp as it is tunable. I want it to look decent, the D&D looks a little plain to me, but the trapp and the whitebrothers (and even the vance and hines for that matter) look pretty good. I don't want to spend a lot of time repacking, but don't really mind if that would otherwise get me the charcteristics I want. Don't expect this to be necessary, as I am not really looking for a race muffler anyway. I assume these things just connect up to the header in place of the stock muffler. I don't want to cut up the stock unit in case it ever goes back on. I already have a forcewinder and rejetted the low speed jet (and my main was a 200 from the factory), so I should be fine there already (if not a bit rich). So given my goals, what would you all recommend, and about what should I expect to pay? F&S Harley in Dayton was very cool with me during the Firebolt launch party (pulling Buell ballons right off the firbolt and giving them to my kids), so if I have a fair retail price I will give them first shot at it. Thanks in advance! Bill |

Is this exhaust system suppose to be a free floater or a hard fixed?!? Seems either way something is going to brake. I installed a U bolt from auto zone to hold the front mount together. Works great. Have discovered a big crack half circle around O2 sensor weld. How much is this thing suppose to move? I swear they need to make a header with flex tubing! |

So, how many of you with V&H mufflers have had this occur: I've been working on a rear hanger for Donn's muffler (yea, I know, I'm slow as molasses..keeping 7 bikes running is taking all my time). In the course of doing that, I've found that the V&H bracket is probably about 1/4" narrower between the two hanging arms than the gap between the hang points in the Swingarm carrier block. I noticed that forever ago when I put the V&H on my bike, and filled the gap with washers, and I've never experienced that failure mode. But I'm willing to bet that anyone that has had the above failure just ran the bolts thru and tightened them up, putting some pre-stress in those hanger arms. And we all know that these paint shakers will take anything that is pre-stressed in the exhaust mounting and turn it into a fatigue fracture. So that's my theory. If you had the above failure and did ensure that there was no pre-stress in the arms by filling the gap, let me know, please. Al |

AL: I bet if I put my rear hanger against the monitor ,it would be a perfect match. I have a V&H sitting on my workbench for that very reason. It's off a 2000 X1. not to mention the 3 times the rear bracket snapped on me. Now the white bros. is busting out in the front. |

Here's the latest Buell project from Road Thing's Garage: This is a race header (purchased on ebay) mounted on my '96 S1, using an automotive Supertrapp purchased from Summit Racing. Muchas Gracias a Jmartz por informacion! I had to section the collector to get everything to line up right. Donnie at S&S Automotive in Houston welded it back together for me. Closeup view of mounting tabs welded to the can. Thanks again Donnie! Pretty clean installation if I say so myself! Runs good, sounds good, hasn't broken yet! Total cost under $300. r-t |

After removing the original exhaust system, whats the best way of cleaning the old gasket out of the exhaust ports? |

My race header didn't like my baggy work pants. There used to also be a loose flap hanging off that got burned to a crisp. "Hey, what smells like it's burning??" |

Caboose, I used a sharp plier and pulled it right out. I then used a vacuum cleaner and a small brush on my dremel to clean it up, vacuum cleaner to prevent stuff falling inside the heads. Fresh |

anyone: I am looking for the rubber bushing that goes in the front exhaust mount. My local BUELL dealer says they cant find it in their books. I remember seeing it on line some where but can't find it now! thanks, steve. |

Steve, I believe the part you are looking for has been replaced with the new factory Y mount for the front exhaust hanger. Tat, at ASB, Banner at the top of the page, has : Polyurethane Exhaust Bushings #5929 - $19.95 they have a higher duromoter rating that the stock part and will last longer.

Tom, great pictures. The whole assembly looks very rugged. How are you securing the muffler to the race header ? Please keep us posted on how the harmonics affect the lifespan of your design. |

Thanks, Donn. It's not as pretty as the one you built, but my bike is not as pretty as yours, either!. The front of the muffler is simply clamped to the header. There's about an inch of overlap, and it's real close to the front mount, so I think it's strong enough. I'll let you know how long the assembly lasts! r-t |

Roadrunr, Get the new updated front mount. I got mine for free, so you should too. It took a while convincing, but you are entitled to it. Fresh |

Well, Donn, I'm down to 2 Buells, but I've still got the Road King, the Confederate, the supermotard and the Norton project to occupy my time and my $!! The length of the pipe was OK; I had to section the collector to get the correct alignment on the muffler without putting anything in a bind. I bought my header off ebay, used, and I think it might have gotten a little tweaked in its previous life! r-t |

Done....old gaskets came out no problem. My D&D full system is now installed. Looks great, sounds awesome ( a bit loud ) A real bass to the exhaust note now. The race ECM goes in tomorrow. I've got a couple pulls on the dyno scheduled for next week. I hope I get the same numbers "sport Twin" did |

FRESH, I called buell cust. service and they took the #'s off my bike and said it wasn't included in the recall. 2000 X1? hmmmmmm go figure. but the shock isso instead of spending the $100 that I don't have now, I just want the bushing for the old style mount. |

My bike went into the shop yesterday to have the SRP shock replaced and the muffler mount replaced. Got a call from them today saying that all of the recalls/service bulletins had already been done. I told them to call the factory back, and haven't heard back yet. Guessing keep up with the convincing. |

Help! My exhaust (Buell Race muffler ) was rattling so I figured it needed repacking. After messing with the rivets, I opened it up. No packing inside and the baffle was disintegrated. Do I have to replace the whole muffler or can I order a new baffle? Also, does anyone have a good tip for removing rivets quickly and easily? It was a nightmare. |

Roadrunr, To my understanding all old front exhaust mounts will be replaced at no costs up to July 2002. (either goodwill item or not) The original service bulletin program has been extended by one year. Specially since the old support was probably not the best part and replacement bushings are not available anymore through Buell. Push harder, if they give it to me, and a lot of other people, why not to you. Refer to service bulletin B-032 (available on this board) and mention that the upgrade period has been extended by 1 year to July 2002. The bulletin mentiones that a 2000 X1 is also included. It is not a real recall, more an upgrade provided by Buell for a dubious quality part. (although some people never have problems with the old one, if it breaks there is no replacement parts old style.) Very strange reaction from Buell cust. service. It pisses me off a bit, its clear on the serv. bulletin. (hope my response doesn't get me blacklisted with Buell. ) Good luck Fresh |

Roadrunr, Fresh is correct. Neither the front muffler mount/hanger upgrade or the SRP shock replacement are "recalls". They are however free upgrades offered officially by the factory. The factory recall that got your SRP shock installed in the first place promised you (or the owner at that time) in writing a free new shock if you object to the SRP. Who did you speak to at customer service? Try again, don't settle for bullshit. |

I need a way to mount an O2 sensor (not sure if it's temporary or permanent) on a chrome plated pipe. What's the best way to do this without screwing up the chrome? Ideas, please! -Saro |

Caboose - I am also considering a D&D slip on (or White Bros."E". However, I'd rather not go much louder than the stock can. How loud is your D&D compared to others (stock, Buell Race, etc., etc.)? Thanks........ |

M2anonymous1: The D&D muffler is quite loud. I'd say it's about the same as a Supertrapp or E-series with 15 or so disks. But it has a much deeper sound which makes it seem louder. You don't just hear the sound waves, you feel them too! Lets put it this way, my neighbour down the street has already commented about it. When I first put it on, the wife wanted to hear it. So there I go tearing down the street doing about 4000RPM, full throttle, in second gear. I guess I won't be doing that any more??!! |
