American Machine & Foundry, then-owners of H-D - those 4-speed XR1000 motors are key pieces of Buell lore |

I can't make out the date on the paperwork but HD bought back from AMF in 81. Something doesn't add up. |

Looks like a great bike - and it has a pedigree. It is not a "fake" - it has a real 750 frame and heads and it looks great! Mert Lawell has built a real "dream bike" and I hope he gets a fair price for it. I would absolutely love to own it and I hope the person who is lucky enough to buy it will take good care of it and ride it with pride.. |

The XR750 is, in my opinion, the most purposeful looking bike ever. I can go to Springfield on Memorial and/or Labor Day and spend hours just looking at them. The history and lineage just surpasses any other bike. I may just have to sell one of the kids.... |

the date looks to be 6-15-86 at the top typed in by the dealer order. 6-20-86 at the bottom hand written in by the factory. You can read the engine vin and case number, a person could verify. Who knows maybe they were still using old order forms. |

i know what AMF means! i have a 76 superglide! xr-1000 was not made during AMF years. xr-1000 was made 1983-1984. employee buyout 1981-1982...right? |

For what it's worth, and I am in no way saying this is gospel but it looks like the merger occurred in 1969 and was bought back in 1981. The link has some pretty neat info as far as what happened when. http://www.retrocom.com/retromilw/milwhd.htm On a side note a local guy has what is now the oldest known knuckle in the USA. The oldest was sold on the bay to Switzerland I believe for somewhere over $200K. His son is a personal friend and he tells me the bike has been meticulously restored over three years, I'm hoping to make it over to see it. IMO the knuckle was the most visually attractive motor made by the motor company. |
