i, personally, like the way the stock air box looks on a buell. i think it look way better than thoose harley lookin things. i have never heard anyone else say they like them.  | ||

I "think" it makes more horses than any other filter/inlet blah blah blah. I will defer to the experts on the board for that one. Mine came off a few weeks after I picked my bike up. It's ugly IMO. I use a Force Intake. (Nothing original) | ||

Dont be ashamed brother.  i love that little box too. Kinda the reason i got the bike. I replaced mine just for performance work if she was still stock i would have her on still. There are also plenty of upgrades you can do to just the box alone. You can "gut" the air box, put in a K&N air filter get rid of the tube and re-rout the breather tubes out of the box, and a a venturi ring. A lot of people cut the filter housing to alow more air flow from the filter. So dont listen to people who say that it should come off cause then they want you to put on a forcewinder then all the bikes look the same anyways. I put a stock air cleaner from an S2 on mine cause i dint like the way the C F one looked. BUT TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE | ||

Ditto, Spiderman! I've done all of the things that you've mentioned and I'm one happy breadbox-equipped S3 rider. Once you give the breadbox one and only one thing to do - feed air to the carburetor - the bike will perform noticeably better. And I love the sound of "intake honk!" Russ | ||

The breadbox and right side heat shield both hide the engine - bad thing. They are both gone and will stay gone on my bike. The breadbox is uniquely Buell though, the same way the bug screen and under the bike muffler are - that's a good thing. You pick. No wrong answers here. | ||

I like the looks of the X1's air cleaner, but hate the M2's. At least with the X1 it's a little more integrated into the design instead of just being a big box hanging out there. | ||

ara i did remove mine just to get an stock S2 element  dyna i'm just the oppisite i think it looks worse on the X1 cause of the intergration cause if you wanna change you have to spend hell of alot more money to reintergrate the tank cover to the bike | ||

I hated the breadbox...and those silly heat shields that didn't do a damn thing but look like crap. I went with S&S. I like it a lot. | ||

Recently I removed the plastics. Now I can say that the big old airbox did work really well. But looks.. what if I make an airbox out of the gas tank, and put the gas in my frame?  | ||

Rick_A, Did removing the heat shields increase the burnt leg problem? I don't like how they look, but if you ever ride on a hot sunny day in shorts, the hot leg syndrome is bad enough with them on. Did it get worse when you took them off? I have an M2. The Setta | ||

Shorts and motorcycles now thats a real good idea, now dont get me wrong jeans arn't the best protection cause i have been down on jeans, and if i didnt i would hate to imagine what it would have looked like with shorts on. | ||

Spiderman, Shorts are just for the occasional jaunt to the beach to play some soccer or something. Not a practise I make a habit of, but when I do it on occasion, I hate having 2nd Degree burns on my inner thigh...not into that. Bad enough with the heat shield, just wanna know if it is worse without it as I don't really like the look. The Setta | ||

Msetta...It seemd to me that the stock airbox, header shield, and the heat shield covering the rear head were trapping a lot of heat...especially at lower speeds. I've heard that a CF heat shield works quite well, but I removed 'em and put some high temp wrap around the header. I don't know which was most effective as I did it all at once...but it feels a LOT cooler. If you ride a pre '99 Buell with shorts, though...you deserve to get burned! The X1 aircleaner/bodywork disgusts me too. | ||

Rick_A, It's a 99 M2, so I feel the heat at slow speeds. Guess I'll keep it on, small sacrafice for sparing my leg "medium-rare" status. The heat can be uncomfortable even with jeans on. I might look into the high temp wrap, thanx. On the thread subject, the bread box saved me when I dropped the bike once, and costs nothing to replace. Even so, it is still plain ugly and its the next thing on my list I want to replace... The Setta | ||
