OK, I've owned the bike 3 weeks & the rear rocker gasket is starting to leak. I've been told it was because I used synthetic (Redline) on my 1st change (10K). And, I've been told with the paper gaskets it would have happened anyway. I know to use the steel gaskets & to change both cylinders, Are there any other paper gaskets I'll need to worry about when these are replaced? Thanks...Bob |

IIRC, the primary cover gasket was paper from OEM, as was the cam / gearcase cover. I think. If you get a "rockerbox set" (I can get you the part number in the morning, I have 2 in the garage, LOL) it has all you need to do a motors' worth of lower, middle and upper rockerboxes including umbrella valves. 10k is right on the edge of being a "late" change to synthetic...but I wouldn't worry about too much more in terms of leaks. You may get a base gasket leak eventually, but those weren't paper to begin with IIRC so it may take a while. Save up for it - big bore kit is just parts cost at that point, LOL. |

You will eventually be taking the rocker boxes back off when the gearcase cover decides to start leaking. So there are plenty of paper gaskets to worry about, but for now you will probably be ok doing what warlizard recommended..... |

Sorry dumb question which is the gear case cover?? I have a 99 x1 and I have fixed so are 3 oil leaks (both rocker boxes, and primary cover), I still have at least 3 to go before the engine stays dry: both cylinder base gaskets (didn't see this until after the rocker box gaskets where done) and Oil pump gasket. |

Gear case is the right side with the cams in it. I guess they call it the gear case because of all the cam gears and oil pump drive gear that are in there.... My rocker boxes were already done when I bought the bike, but I replaced the primary cover gasket when I installed the improved chain tensioner right after buying the bike. It was just starting to weep.... This year the gear case gasket took a dump at the dragstrip, luckily it was spotted all over the shock before my next run! As soon as I replaced that (along with the oil pump drive gear while I was in there), the starter motor gasket started gushing! Of course I didn't know about that one when I did the primary gasket! Al at American Sport Bike says the oil pump gasket isn't much of a worry (and it is easy enough to get at to do anytime). Now my bike is dry and we are both happy! |

You are all talking about improved gaskets since original introduction of the particular model year. What no one has mentioned is, are you talking about replacing the gaskets with OEM Buell or some other aftermarket company's gaskets. Thanks, xrrevin |
