Says James "In my opinion, there's nothing in this world Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl." "52 Vincent Black Lightning" by Richard Thompson- GREAT song |

Perhaps Buell can adopt that light-pull centrifugal clutch. I imagine the original patent has expired by now. I think Leno earns around 10 million a year. Granted, that is a lot of money but considering the cost of his hobbies , is it really enough? His tax burden living in California must come close to 50%. I imagine he employees several full time people to do everything from cutting his lawn to traveling around the country looking for old automobiles. |

I've seen Jay Leno many times at the Rock Store. Even spoke to him a few times, all I can say he IS a regular guy... Always approachable, always willing to talk about his ride du jour. |

The story I read once is that Leno only spends what he makes on tour. Yeah, that would be a lot since he works so much. His NBC income he just lets pile up. 'Course I don't believe everything I read. |

I know if I were a billionaire I would try to revive something like that a small company making 50 to 200 bikes a year with ubertechnology yet still a pure motorcycle everyone can dream right |

When I was at Glacier Park a couple guys rode up on Velocettes. It turned out there were 50 of them there from Seattle. It was pretty cool knowing that people were willing to ride classics around like that. They said they met there every year. |

Of all the people with bucket loads of money to spend, I mostly highly approve of Jay Leno's way of spending his. He has some severely cool stuff in his collection, and it isn't just limited to motorcycles. There was a story a few years back regarding one of Leno's Vincents, he accidentally dinged the gas tank while out riding it with some friends. That same night during his monologue he mentioned it as a joke "Does anyone know where I can get a gas tank for a Vincent Black Shadow?" The next day (somehow) this guy calls the studio and gets through to Jay. "I understand you're looking for a gas tank for a Vincent Black Shadow. Well, I've got a whole bike I'll sell you." Leno thinks he's being BS'ed at first, but he gets some info from the guy including the serial number and tells him he'll call him back. He then calls up the head of the VOC (Vincent Owners Club) and tells him the story. The guy asks him for the serial number. "Oh yea, we always wondered what happened to that bike. It was bought by a U.S. serviceman in England and we've never been able to find out where it wound up." Leno calls the guy back and works out a price with him, and tells him he'll call him back to let him know about the shipping arrangements." The guy asks him how much he'll have to spend to ship it. Leno tells him "About $500 or so." The guy tells him he'll deliver it for that much, and a couple of days later, shows up with the Vincent in the back of a pickup truck. Turns out there was something relatively minor wrong with the bike (a failed gear in the transmission IIRC) that had broken years before and the bike had been parked ever since. Cool story. |

Well seeing as we're swapping Vincent stories, I have a few. Here's one. The Vinny in the pic next to my Buell is owned and ridden regularly, British winters included, by my friend Martin (right in the pic). He bought it from a private collection belonging to an old man who'd not ridden it for years. The old man was the second owner. When Martin was in receipt of all the paperwork he set about tracing the Vinnys history through the VOC. Turns out the first owner was still alive and Martin was able to locate him too. When he did the original owner told him his first long journey on the Vinny in I believe 1953 was to Istanbul and back. Can you imagine what it must have been like back then riding the roads to Istanbul from Scotland. Wish I could have been there. Rocket |

If he keeps half that after taxes, so 15 million a year "take home", he makes 288,000 thousand a week! I could prolly afford a few toys with that kind of coin. |

Here's a good place to look for one if you're in the market: http://www.thevincent.com/ There's a 52 Vincent "Rapide" (the model just under the Black Shadow with slightly milder tuned V-twin IIRC) with a recent rebuild for $40k currently listed. The VOC built a complete, all new one from reproduction parts recently. See the article here: http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2007/02/07/vince nt-black-shadow-built-from-all-new-parts/ I'm sure it was NOT cheap. |

Yeah, He had Hal's Performance shop build him a race bike with lights. I wonder how well anyone but Jay would do on that bike if stopped by the CHP? No charcoal canister, aftermarket exhaust LOUD! etc... |

Oh says Red Molly to James "That's a fine motorbike. A girl could feel special on any such like" Says James to Red Molly "My hat's off to you It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952. And I've seen you at the corners and cafes it seems Red hair and black leather, my favourite colour scheme" And he pulled her on behind and down to Boxhill they did ride Oh says James to Red Molly "Here's a ring for your right hand But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man. For I've fought with the law since I was seventeen, I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine. Now I'm 21 years, I might make 22 And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you. And if fate should break my stride Then I'll give you my Vincent to ride" "Come down, come down, Red Molly" called Sergeant McRae "For they've taken young James Adie for armed robbery. Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside. Oh come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside" When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left He was running out of road, he was running out of breath But he smiled to see her cry He said "I'll give you my Vincent to ride" Says James "In my opinion, there's nothing in this world Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl. Now Nortons and Indians and Greeves won't do, Ah, they don't have a soul like a Vincent 52" Oh he reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys Said "I've got no further use for these. I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome, Swooping down from heaven to carry me home" And he gave her one last kiss and died And he gave her his Vincent to ride. http://rtlist.net/VincentBlackLightning1952.mp3 |
