Anyone ever hear of police using the ULY? Seems it would be a good fit, with performance, comfort, bags, American. A bit more nimble then some of the HD police bike I see. | ||

He may not have ridden a police bike but I have, and let me tell you. A police road king is just like a regular road king. Surprisingly nimble to handle, slow as hell, infinately comfortable. Biggest problem I see with a police Uly is... dah dah dahhhh. Ride height. I don't know if you notice but bike cops usually sit on their bike with their feet on the ground flashing radar. Doing that on a Uly would be amazingly uncomfortable for anyone with a 34 inch inseam or less. And the other problem is if you sit on the bike with your feet on the foot pegs the kickstand will break!  | ||

Joe What IS the deal with those police bikes and the sidecars? I've never ridden a bike with a sidecar but my understanding is it's more like a 3-wheeled car than a bike. Seems like you give away all the maneuverability, handling and other advantages of a bike for glorified "trunk". I mean, I see them all the time but I've never seen a passenger in the car. Doesn't look like you can even put a rider in the sidecar. Looks more like a travel pod on a jet fighter What's it full of weapons, etc? Gotta admit it though, had I been on one a couple weeks ago it would have been a lot harder to tip me over | ||

A sidecar holds the bike upright during long parades,etc. where balancing a solo bike would get pretty tiring. The National Park Service has charge of most of the parade venues in D.C., and thusly has a huge fleet of sidecar equiped FLHPs. They even do there own sidecar training program, and HD would have probably discontinued the sidecar if not for their orders. | ||

Cool. Reason I asked is because I live in DC and I have never seen one in a parade although I've seen tons of the non-sidecar variety as well as some smaller bikes (if I remember right they were little Kaws). I have also seen the sidecars as far north as Thurmont, MD., although I can't say for sure what department it was from. So it's a giant training wheel? | ||

"A police road king is just like a regular road king." Actually the Police dressers have their own suspension p/n's, that match no other suspension p/n in the HD lineup. I owned a FLHP (Police RK) for a couple years. Great bike LOTS of respect from cages in traffic..hehe. I bought the bike thinking I would get a killer paint job to cover up the ole Birch White. But like all good bike owners I had enough dough to buy the bike but not enough to get the killer paint job at the same time. So I rode it as is and discovered the "Moses effect" traffic parts like the Red Sea. Sold the bike to a coworker who was in love with it and was going to spend over MSRP on a used sportster. The day I rode my new Electraglide and discovered that traffic really does disrespect motorcycles I was ready to call and order a set of birch white sheet metal. | ||

My old daily ride (before my S2) was/is a 96 FLHP from the city PD. White with blue stripes really does cut down on tailgaters and "I diddun see you" lane changers, LOL. And yes, they do have a different suspension. Even with the steering stops still in place on my FLHP, I run it thru Battletrax with no problems (and competitive times!). The sidecars are seasonal for DC. They stack 'em like cordwood during the summer. They're for parade use and to help balance / allow riding in snow and winter muck. We do have quite a few motormen who live in Frederick / Walkersville / Thurmont, so seeing the guys up here is no surprise...and throw Camp David into the mix, we have a really good presence. We also see quite a few MSP motormen with sidecars in the winter, for the same reason - no-fall-over-in-snow When we get 'em in for service, the hacks are usually filled with road flares, tools, ticket books, E-tools, bags of salt and other assorted foul weather necessities. You can get a person in one (without all that other junk), they're actually pretty roomy once you're in...it's the in/out transition that gets me. Think "kayak". Handling...well, it's different.Hard right turns, it's pretty easy to float the hack about three feet off the ground as the bike leans to the outside of the turn. Kinda fun...if you're prepared. Left turns, just like a trike or a car, no lean. Donuts in the snow are fun, too! (Message edited by ratbuell on October 16, 2007) | ||

There IS an agency in GEORGIA... I believe it was GWINNETTE... that used S2 or S3's as POLICE BIKES. This was back in 97-99... I remember seeing them on the road SEVERAL times. Matt (LEO SOUTH GA.) | ||

Kind of like it'd be nice if they offered the City-X "X" on the solid color air box covers? Since they have the molds it should be easy for them to mold the flyscreen in any of the stock colors... | ||

Sumpin's fishy. Did you catch the tail on the "Uly"? It appears to be either an S or an STT tail. I always wondered what the Uly would look like with that tail. Now I know. Not half bad. I'd still like plastics in other colors for the Uly, though. I would really like the Valencia Translucid Orange. I hear orange is faster anyway. | ||

Not to mention it's missing the beak and has the R/S fender. The wheels are also R/S wheels as well. What exactly are we looking at here? Is this a factory custom or someone's personal bike? |
