How useful are the cityx/uly hand guards at keeping your fingers warm in cool/cold riding? I meant to buy these sooner, but I've been too busy. At any rate, I have heated grips and I do own some cold weather gloves...will these keep my hands any warmer? Before it is suggested, I'm not interested in the Hippo hands right now... Thanks! | ||

They are ok. They work well for keeping the rain off. The tourtech extensions would prob help some. IMHO you would be better off buying a set of heated gloves. By the time you buy all the bits for the handguards you'll be close to a set of gloves in price. Poke around in the "rounders" website. I remember someone there was wiring a set of gloves for $40. You just send them your insulated gloves and they come back heated. | ||

I would say they do block a little wind but not too much. I just added heated grips to my bike. The only times I actually felt them blockin the wind is on the rare occasion I wear no gloves for a ride. Other then that on a really hot day your hand sweats a little more, haha. I also have not gotten any rocks or big bugs off my hands yet, but I have seen many wack those gaurds I still like them though, I dont know if its because of the look or that they might be doing something. to each their own | ||

I think they make a significant difference. They dropped my "pain threshold" riding temperature (20 mile highway speed ride) from around 45 degF to around 38 degF. Now that I have added the polly cartridge heaters, I expect to be using the bike regularly at any temperature above 30 degF. | ||

They help a lot! Yeah you get some turbulence but the bottom line is that hands stay warmer. | ||

I'm another who find they work well. I've got the Touratech extensions on them though. I find with the handguards(and heated grips) I can ride with lighter weight gloves longer into the season. I hate bulky gloves so the longer I can use a lighter weight glove the better. | ||

Mine help a small amount with wind protection but the real bonus is bug protection as mentioned above and rock protection. Oh, and one time (at band camp), they provided very large bird protection too!  | ||

I felt they were pretty much useless. Couldn't tell a temperature difference (with winter gloves or without, but my hands get cold easily anyway), and don't protect the levers in a drop (pop right off). I think they may only be good for rocks. ~SM | ||

I rode my bike last fall on a 38F day to pick up my wife's Blast. I just had my HD uninsulated gloves on. Riding the Uly no problem, cool but not bad. Riding the Blast my hands got so cold they stung. It was tough to get in the last five miles. I say they make a big difference for cold weather protection and defense against bees and hard bugs and rocks and such. | ||

Thanks for the insight everyone. I love my grip heaters and can't see living without them....but the tops of my hands need attention. For the money, these look like a good deal. | ||

I use them on my 12S which has CityX plastics on it. I only use them in the winter months though. They allow me to wear my summer gloves year round. I don't like the bulkiness of my winter gloves. They come off come summer time as I'm not big on their looks and how they make my bike look. | ||

I think they help a lot personally. My commute is about 35 to 45 min and plenty of 25 deg. mornings including snow on occasion. They help with deflecting wind, rain, rocks and ... They even help a little when bitches without insurance driving Saturns hit you. | ||

They work, I did not like the SS demo with out them. And if you are on the back woods road, the do a nice job for small branches, tall road weeds and thrown debri. But best of all, they do protect your levers a bit if you experience gravity. | ||

Actually I think the hand guards do protect the bike in a tip over. More specifically the bar end plugs, which the hand guards snap onto, absorb shock - then break. $2 each to replace. | ||

i removed mine to see how much of a differnce there was and it make a big difference when you are used to riding with them on then try and go without on a cold morning. | ||

I want a sticker for each handguard. I want them printed backwards so they appear normal in some one's rear view mirror. I want the one on the left grip to say "MOVE" and the right grip to say "OVER" edit: maybe the left one should say "PULL" instead? (Message edited by metalstorm on October 14, 2007) | ||

Again, thanks for the insight everyone. I just ordered everything I should need for a grand total of $63 to my door. The only things I didn't buy are the bar end plugs since I have bar end mirrors. I'll have to figure something out, but I'm sure it will be worth it. | ||

I didn't think American Sport Bike sold the handguard kit...at least, I don't remember seeing it on their site, so I ordered the parts from www.lshd1.com . As far as the bar end adapters, those won't work since my bar end mirrors are an ebay special and don't mount like the CRG style. My mirrors and the plug are actually integral, so I'll have to mount them differently. The mirrors were cheap though, so I'm not too concerned...I'll figure something out. | ||

I added them to my 03 XB9 a few years ago. Im really glad I did b/c last year I did something stupid. Wasnt paying attention and I crashed. The left guard was all messed up but it could have been my hand that was ground down instead of the plastic! |
