Reg, the dust got every where and yes inside the shield. Not to bad though. Spacing rider's was the key to a dust free ride. (Well,.... not dust free) The ride went smoooth and nary a bad word from anyone to anyone. This group needs another adventure ride!

Thanks Tom, sorry I sent such big files. I'm still trying to get the hang of the digital pic thing. I got a new host now, maybe the pics will resize when I uplaod them. |

Photoshop Elements does an awful lot of nice things for $90 or so. And the N-1 version is very feature rich, if you can find somebody selling that off. Between the redeye removal tool, the color balance correcting tool, and the "save for web" feature, I have not regretted buying it. The Save for Web feature gives you a nice little wizard where you can change the resolution, the image format, and the image quality in real time, and it will tell you how big the result will be. Epic ride! Wish I could take one like it... |

Paul,I bailed early to get back for Al's BBQ in Buellton.Had to ride across Oregon and up to Tacoma to retrieve my truck with my dang brothers bike in it and hightail it home---sure woulda been easier to just ride home.Got home wed,left friday morn with Terry for BBQ,got back sunday afternoon.Ordered into work 3 hours later. Glad I got some vacation in. Reg,have bob check with his neighbors as they were snapping lots of pics,I only got Deb riding bike. |

Joe, I checked on the rolling block action you were asking about. All the stuff is gone...auctioned off and gone. No leads available that I can find. Evidently it was a high dollar action, selling for $5K and up. Most of the inventory went to Europe, and the East coast of the U.S., to the rich and famous. I didn't know the man who had the business. The people I knew, (Jack Deister), built barrels, but weren't associated with the BAM shop. Sorry. Thanks for checking into the action for me Paul. Oh well, like I need another hobby! Yep, I rode the rest of the route myself. Had a grand time. The boy's left me at Riley. 29 mile's south of Riley my speedo cable came loose and spit the drive out. Used the gps for an odometer. Rode till 10pm the first day trying to get off the 6000+ Fremont mountains. I kept loosing the trail then backtracking over and over. Finally just parked it, got some grub and went to bed. Everything was clear as a bell in the morn, sorta, the trail had fallen tree's on it. I was just too tired to figure it out the previous night. Rode into Lakeview like I owned the place. Nice little town by the way. Got some dinner, saddled up and pointed it west toward Klamoth falls. Hit heavy snow on the pass. Went back to Lakeview. left the next morning, was 22 degrees. Made it to Hamburgh CA. Stayed a couple day's there. Then I went south on I5 just north of MT Shasta. Caught 97, made Wenatchee WA at ten that night. Rode over Stevens pass wednesday. Winter has started a wee bit early this year. Nice to be home. Justin's hyper crossing. Joe.

This is what Justin's leg looked like after denting the chrome bumper on a new Ford deisel. That four wheeler will be a lot more carefull next time. I hope he learned a lesson! Joe.

I have a Winchester rolling block in 7mm mauser sitting in the basement that I am afraid to shoot... The barrel is not pretty... about 1/3 of the way up from the action there is either a badly pitted part of the barrel, or chunks are just gone. Lots of pitting on the outside as well, must have been stored wet a lot. It had a broken firing pin, but I got a replacement... haven't put it in. Has a bayonet with it as well, also hacked up. Probably worth as much as the gun (which I always assumed is precious little). |

Reep, Are you sure it is not a Remington? http://www.militaryrifles.com/Remington/Remingtn.h tm I am an aficionado of sorts of those. The markings should be on the upper tang of the action behind the hammer if it was Remington made, otherwise it may have markings in various places. That was the Harley-Davidson of modern breech loading rifles, a truly timeless mechanism. The Mauser '98 and the Springfield '03 are sports bikes and highly complicated in comparison. :>) They were made in 7mm for a number of South American countries. Some were made by Remington, some by national armories. Here's the bad news. The early actions were made of cast iron and are suitable for use only with black power ammunition. The later ones were made of steel and are okay with mild loads approximating the pressures in the original loadings. If yours was Remington made and has a 1901 patent date it is a smokeless rifle. Consider anything else as not safe for use with modern ammo. To further the issues, some of the 7mm ammo that those were made to use does not meet the specs and dimensions of the 7mm Mauser cartridge. With the wrong ammo there can be some headspace issues that can result in cases rupturing on firing and causing damage to both shooters and the gun. Feel free to PM me for more info on that. When I was still gunsmithing, I helped a few guys make rifles on the rolling block actions for the NRA's Black Powder Metallic Silhouette shooting competition. A truly wonderful form of shooting competition. Watch out for the old geezers in that one, they'll hand you your lunch on skill, knowledge, and technique long before youth and vigor can prevail. Bob, that Idaho route look's like fun! Didnt notice a big over abundance of gravel. When are we leaving? I suggest we start at the south end. Then head up to Havre for drink's. You've not seen the Castle yet. There may be some great riding up there too. Will you please get that molding on and retire! And fishing for Ron! I better get the oil changed in the bike first thing. Snail. The dry lake bed is Fossil Lake. Just a little N-E of Christmas Valley. It's big and smoooooth. Didnt ride across it though. Went out about a quarter mile or so for the picture. I didn't see any sign's saying not to go out there and go fast. When do you want to go? I'll need to change the oil in the SV. I'll get right on it. My rear tire is bald. Is that correct for dry lakebed racing? Joe. |

Joe, You're right. My apologies for the hijack. I just reacted to Reep's post. I'm going to check out that ASSRA site, looks interesting. All my machines are gone, it's probably too late for me as far as getting back into it now... As a guy that moved east about six years ago I was enjoying the photos of the west and the rides back there. I miss the western U.S. but you can't live everywhere. Jack |

I want a HAYES Diesel! Bumped into Fred Hayes and one of his test riders out here (their manufacturing operation is just an hour from here) - got to see the place, their manufacturing and design. Fred has set a few LSR's for diesel motorcycles now (FMJ, Snail - you may have met him on the salt) They're hoping to have their diesel which they designed and still produce for the USMC "civilianized." Would have been on the market already if it weren't for that little thing going on over in Afghanistan/Iraq making more demands for production. Got to look at two of the "civvie" diesels and they're SWEET! They have repeatedly gotten over 100 MPG on the highway and NEARLY 100 in the dirt - running military JP-8 fuel. Talked to their USMC trainer - Byron (forgot his last name) - told him they MUST run one at Willow Springs in Formula Singles road racing! He didn't laugh... more like a "hmmmm...." (thinking...)

Snail: It was great to meet you.... I had a great time visiting about old haunts and aquaintances. The beast definitely took some hits but nothing a large hammer and a crow bar can't fix. Jim: Yep, bought an older 650 Dakar. Needs a little TLC and a few Farkles but she will be much more appropriate for these backcountry trips. Hope tosee you guys again soon. On another note; Accomplished another 26.2 mile run. Today was the famed Portland Marathon I discussed during the trip. Finished in 3:38:18 for an average pace of 8:20 per mile.... would have been much easier AND faster on a bike! Ron |
