Proper fit is often more important than brand. I had a friend who swore a $130 HJC was quieter than a $400+ Shoei. But I think the HJC just fit the shape of his head better. | ||

A crash helmet is in close contact with the skull and most of the noise is caused by direct vibration of the inner part of the ear by turbulence around the helmet. Helmets with side pods are the very worst in terms of noise and also avoid designs with protruding ducts and vents. Anything that disturbs the flow of air over the helmet (and especially around the sides) will create noise that can't be stopped by earplugs. | ||

the top of the line shoei and shark have great reputations for quietness. I have a mid range Shark and it is much better than the 2 HJC's I have had in the past. | ||

My noisiest helmet is an Arai Corsair. The noise has NOTHING to do with direct vibration of my inner ear. It is all about those protruding intakes on the top. When I cover them with my hand, all is quiet. | ||

Something that I hadn't thought of but after what the girl @ CycleGear told me, it makes sense. If you have a helmet that has more ventilation, it tends to be louder. Seems simple enough but I had not thought about it before. My EXO-700 was relatively quiet when compared to the Icon Mainframe that I am using. Just bought a Shoei X11 but haven't tested it yet as it is raining. | ||

If you find one that is dead quiet, let us know. In the meantime, if you try putting a set of earplugs in your ears, you'll be eliminating the noises that are most irritating. And those are also potentially the most damaging to your hearing with long term exposure. I can hear many of the "warning" noises (horns, voices, sirens, etc.) better with ear plugs in (or my hearing aids muted for about the same level of attenuation) than I can with nothing in my ears when wearing a HJC Sy-Max modular. I asked my audiologist if it was my imagination about hearing better with ear plugs in and she said it was not. She said the medium to high frequency wind noises were masking the audio range noises. So ear plugs are worth a try if you've not used them. Jack | ||

Just order a Scorpion Warhawk with a "chin curtain" ($7.95)it was recommended by the guys at sportbikegear.com. A good fit and ear plugs are a good idea too!!! | ||

chin curtains work magic on wind noise. Try wrapping your thumb and index finger around the chin of the helmet while riding and you'll get and idea of the noise reduction. | ||

I'm getting a Shoei RF1000 monday in the mail. How quite are they? Hoping there better than the HJC and Icon I have now. | ||

Sorry Buelltroll, my Shoei RF is dissapointingly louder than my old HJC. I HAVE to wear plus int he Shoei, but it is a more comfy helment because it doesn't try to lift off my head like the HJC. --S | ||

i used to have a hjc cl-14 just got a hjc ac-12 and it is MUCH quieter. i accidentally found myself going 90 today because i was so used to how loud my old helmet was it had become my speedometer. | ||

has anyone ever owned any fulmers? im thinking about buying one, i need a new helmet and funds are tight, they seem decent enough...the way i understand the only difference in a high dollar one and a cheap one is looks. | ||

I have 2 Fulmer AFS7 helmets. One is flat black and one has a wild dragon graphic. I got them for about $125 each and they are very comfortable and not too noisy. The padding comes out for washing also. Last week I bought a new HJC FS-10 with the dark flip down visor. (like a fighter pilot helmet) It's comfortable but it's a noisy unit. I'm going to try tape over the vents to see if that is where the racket is coming from. |
