The most powerful non-watercooled production twin motorcycle engine soon to be available: http://motorcycledaily.com/01october07_2008bmw_hp2 .htm I figure it'll be around $30K when it's available for sale... |

Sharp bike with some sharp stats. BMW is getting serious. I don't think it will be anywhere close to $30k, though. The HP2 Dirtbike is just a hair over $20k right now, and the R1200S (the bike this new one seems to replace) starts at under $15k. This one only has about 10 more hp than the R1200S, and comes with the optional suspension. I'd guess something closer to, but not over $20k is reasonable at most. |

They won't sell many at $30K. Why would anyone want one of these even at $20K when they could get a 1098S? |

This isn't a replacement, it's an addition to the line. The "HP" bikes are analogous to the "M" series automobiles from BMW. It's the "No holds barred" performance series, so don't look for any compromises made for sport touring comfort and stuff like that. I suspect this is going to be sold as their "out of the box" endurance racer, as the HP1 is their out of the box desert racer. |

I still don't think it's going to be any more than $20k. Give the R1200S some new bodywork and a little more juice and you have this bike. The frame looks identical...

Interesting that the article mentions the torque as well as the horsepower. Those intake runners from the air cleaner to the fuel injectors look like Forcewinders in reverse. I really like the R1200S, but I wonder how many of the HP they will sell at all, even at $20K. That's a lot of dough, 'typical' BMW riders want sport-touring more often than endurance racing is my impression. Aside from Paris-Dakar, has BMW won any kind of big races in the last 40 years? I haven't been keeping up since the R90S (late 1970's.) (Message edited by jayvee on October 02, 2007) |

The HP series isn't meant to be mass-market. It'll be a limited production run and will most likely be purchased by well-heeled collectors and serious endurance competitors. They've done well in the Baja 1000 with the HP1 recently. I believe someone entered the Pikes Peak climb with an HP1 Megamoto, but I don't know how he did. |

I'm going to pick up an 07 R1200s with all the options this weekend. 1300 miles on it. $12,500. Nice bikes; I've been looking for a deal on one. |

I'm surprised BMW didn't use the HP2 Megamoto chassis and telescopic front fork instead of the R chassis and Telelever front end on this bike. Doesn't seem right to give it the HP2 designation if it's a hotted up R1200S. They're all nice though. I really like the iterations of the HP2 and R1200 line. |

The megamoto uses the HP2 enduro's chassis with a shorter suspension, brakes .... I ran R1200s wheels on my HP2 for track duty.
I like it in it's enduro form too ...
I'm not surprised the HP2 Sport is based on the R1200S since it's their most sportbike like boxer. |

I really like the way my R1100SA handles but it's definitely lethargic. I only got a short and slow test ride on the R1200S. A little more hunched over, which doesn't bother me, but the power is awesome. Downside to the R1200S is that there isn't hard luggage available for it. Some throwovers are fine I guess. So many people are staying away because of the lack of hard luggage. The only thing I don't like about BMW is parts and service are extremely expensive. I thought it was a PITA getting parts for the X1. And then there's the issue of needing very expensive special tools and computer systems if you want to work on it yourself. There's still a bunch you can do but not as much as I'd like. BMW is the most expensive bike I've ever owned. Cost of ownership is so high that I won't buy another no matter how much I like somethin they make...and I have always liked the GS. The HP2 R1200S is a beauty. A version of that is already out there doing endurance races and being very succesful. Not as fast as the Japanese bikes but how can you expect it to be? Still using the stock shaft drive/gearing. The engine is slightly higher for more lean angle thanks to the tube frame design. It's still a long wheelbase, 58.5" if I remember correctly. Is that nuke blue? |

Why would anyone want one of these even at $20K when they could get a 1098S? I like it better than the 1098s, though I'm not that familiar with the Ducati. I like air cooled engines, and the horizontally opposed configuration BMW uses just seems "right." |

Grizzly bought one of the first HP's and has been riding it, along with the one that BMW provides him, in a number of endurance events. He gives it high marks. |
