Quick Question: Can I remove my Rocker Box covers on my 99X1 to POLISH Them out... and then SIMPLY re-install them... Meaning... is anything going to come loose when i remove the covers, or will i have to reset anything..... Thanks, Matt |

Looks like the top cover and the middle ring can be popped off without disturbing stuff. Though I never did it myself. |

Natex, Thanks.... as the years have gone by... my covers are looking like crap... I figured since I am going to be at the Father in laws machine shop... might as well put his massive sander/polisher to the work. Thanks, Matt. |

You can remove the covers without disturbing anything else. The issue comes when you want to remove the rocker boxes themselves. I think that some people have encountered problems reusing the rocker box cover gaskets. Apparently they expand so they won't fit in the grooves once they're out. I may be the only person who doesn't notice the appearance of the rocker box covers... maybe I should try to tidy mine up. |

The top cover and the center ring will come off by removing the 4 1/4-20 sockethead screws. There is a sealing washer system on the screws - Kind of a copper washer and fiber or rubber type of thing if I recall. The rubber rocker box gaskets MIGHT be re-usable, but you won't know till you get them out. (What No... said above) Make sure you clean everything first or you'll get misc. garbage contaminating the oil. If you have the stock breathers it might be a good time to replace the 2 'umbrella' valves in the middle rings. The older they get, the less they seem to keep the oil out of the air cleaner/filter/catch can - whatever you are running on the end of the tubes. Pretty cheap from the dealer. The new ones are a lovely shade of green, which goes so well with the oily aluminum. I was replacing the throttle cable on my RS-S2T Wierd Bike (The wife broke it - I should have made HER fix it!) and I had to remove the tank cover, then the tank, to get at the top of the carb and misc. routing areas. Well - I thought the same thing about those unsightly covers, all stained and corroded and all. About an hour later I was looking at the bare pistons. Ya gotta learn when to stop with the "appearance" thing. AL Ps - be prepared to cut &/or grind down an Allen wrench to fit that one pesky cover bolt that's so damnably close to the frame! You can forget about the torque setting on that one, too! I have yet to figure how to get a torque wrench into that spot! |

I guess with all this good info mine will get done too. Maybe over winter. |

I just re-did my lower rocker box gasket in front, it sprang a messy leak. When I went to do the back one, I took the top off, and found the updated umbrella valve, took a closer look and the rear one had already been done. My top cover gaskets were still re-usable, I guess it makes a difference how new, maybe how many miles? |

Drill out the drain hole to 1/8th inch and chamfer the umbrella hole. Click: http://www.saintjohn.nbcc.nb.ca/marriott/x1/Breath erSolution.jpg Gasket sets were less than $15.00 when I had mine off. Not worth it to reuse the old ones. If you pull the whole works off(which you should) make sure the valves are fully closed on each head when you torque it back down. Easy job for most Buellers. |

I've reused the top 2 rocker box gaskets a number of times with no problems. When you remove then do not stretch them. Pat them with a rag to get the oil off but don't pull them through the rag like a noodle. That stretches them so they don't fit in the grooves. The lower bocker box gasket should not be reused even if it's the new metal one or the rubber coated James or Cometic version. The old paper two piece version is NEVER to be used. If you have any spares, use them to start a camp fire... The advice about drilling the drain hole and chamfering the umbrella hole is GOOD advice. It does help reduce pukeage. |
