Henrik, No, I never did, because I couldn't get ST to give me a new inlet stub pipe. After the pipe failed at the inlet, I drove on it too long and it sawed the inlet sub pipe so much I was concerned it wouldn't hold up, since the inlet stub still has to terminate into the baffle perf tube. If they have given me a new inlet pipe, I definitely would have done that rather than getting the replacement pipe. The replacement pipe is holding up quite well. No issues in over 5000 miles, other than it not being mounted to my race header |

Dan, I believe you. I wonder how they do it at the factory to prevent them from falling off before the 500 or 1K mile check... When I installed them, I torqued them, loosened them and retorqued again. Ran it for a couple of minutes to get up to temp, a few throttle blips and then retorqued. I never really checked them when the bike was new. Maybe they were really loose all along. Hmmm, another character trait fot these beasts.... Brad |

Thanks Al; I'll probably try out some reinforcements before I mount the pipe. Henrik |

There I was...1:am coming home from a midnight high..speed run... full leathers..tight tuck at speed ... 125 indicated, accelerating west bound on a long flat fla expressway.. reeling in a foolish wannabe speed racer in an Acura ...when I FELT a vibration then almost simultaneously heard PING... I knew it even before I saw it...damm front muffler shoe broke again...DAMMN... |

Jeez Donn, You sure have problems with exhaust systems! Were you running your custom Boss unit on the race header? Brad |

yes. The muffler is great...If I could only keep a front mount from breaking all would be well. 1st front mount broke in 1600 miles with a race header. The second broke in 300 miles. The good news is that I pay atention so that I have no stud problems. This time I have to say its my fault. I'm still using the welded shoe from the first break. I am pretty sure that I overtightened the clamp that holds the shoe to the race header. |

Hey Jason, did you get the "package" ? The mount of the muffler to the race pipe is excessively secure. No chance of it dropping. (Screw plus band clamp) I have ordered a replacement shoe, so the fix is a swap...or I'm hoping our resident design engineer par excellence... AL L. will make a new front mount to match the spiffy rear mount he's already prototyping. |

To anyone who's made their own exhaust (like someone in Colorado maybe...) What do you do about the shoulder where the snap ring goes? Is there a source for these? Do you lathe one up from tubing? Do you hack something off an old exhaust? -Saro |

Saro, Unless you have a beading roller you gonna have to turn up a suitable fitting and weld it on. A back issue of Battle2Win has a pic of someone that does it for race headers. If'n ya want a pic, let me know and I'll scan and post it for you. Brad |

Yes, I hack one off an old pipe and weld it up. I think, though, you could probably make something by cutting a small ring from a 1-7/8 pipe and welding it over a 1-3/4 pipe. Or maybe just build up the bead. |

Hi all, I am not fond of my yellow exhaust headers they look shitty and like to try a fast solution of painting them black. Does anyone have an idea what temperatures a Buell header can reach, especially near the heads. I tried looking on the internet for info but no clear data. I bet someone must have wondered before me and measured the temp at the headers. I can't do it right now since my header is at the welder for repair and bung install. Will a 1500 F resist paint be sufficient or are the temps higher than that and do some of you guys have experience with painting headers. I just want it black no gloss. If this doesn't work i'll have to ship them to Jet Hot coatings as a last resort. Thx. Fresh |

Standard automobile high temperature header paint will work fine. Even the Jet Hot is not supposed to survive temperatures much over 1500o. I had my race header Jet Hot coated in their mat black finish. Very nice! Not as thick a coating as I expected, but very nice and definitely worth the price. |

All, I was thinking of replacing my kooks muffler again. The first one was the old bullet style muffler. The hanger broke off after about 3k miles. The new one is “can” shaped like the buell race kit. It's a little quieter than the first, but I think the original one had a better tone to it. I've been thinking about trying to adapt a supertrap type muffler to the kooks header. I was hoping save most of the performance I've gained with the kooks header while lowering the db levels to something more socially acceptable. Besides, it's hard to avoid unwanted attention when your bike's exhaust is screaming “LOOK AT ME! I'M RIDING LIKE A BAT OUTTA HELL”. The kooks header collector ends up under the engine next to the shock just like the race kit and has a 2 1/2” opening. The kooks muffler is about 14” long and the engines mount for the muffler hanger ends up about 11” behind end of the collector. Does any know if suppertrap makes a muffler close these dimensions? Has anyone else tried this combination before? Thanks in advance, Tommyboy |

Tommyboy: the old style Supertrapp IDS muffler is supposed to fit the Buell Race header. I picked one up from Manchester HD&B. They supposedly have a bunch in stock that they're looking to get rid of. Price was reasonable, but they insist on the "for off road only" BS, since they (and we) know that there are breaking issues with the mounts at both ends and with the inlet pipe (see earlier discussion in this topic). The parts guy at Manchester is looking into getting me one of the new Supertrapp rear hangers which should fit this muffler. Then all I need is to further secure the inlet pipe per Al L's suggestions and I hope to be good to go. I'll also try to beef up the Race header front slip mount and somehow strap on a bracket for the front header tie bar. Henrik |

hello all, have a question regarding the bullett muffler that was offered for buells. i bought one from this website. it has the 2 1/2" inlet for the 1999-2002 buells but here is the problem: i believe it was made for the 1999-2000 model year. have any of you been able to mount this muffler using the NEW muffler bracket? for the life of me i cannot get the front muffler bracket to line up with the Y mount. i have read several times that any muffler works with the old mount will work with the new mount. HELP!! any and all info is very muvh appreciated. thanx, orngm2 dalmans3@yahoo.com |

Orange, What pipe are you refering to? Is it a Boss? If it is, they mount up with no problems. Give us a bit more info we can probably help you out. What was the mounting problem? What do you mean by lining up? Was the opening in the "Y" to small? Lots of folks here have mounted up many different pipes, I'll bet we can get this one to go too! Brad |

bluzm2, the muffler i am refering to is a BULLETT muffler. this was made by someone from this website. it was one of the first after market mufflers for a buell. the muffler is a one piece. meaning the collector and muffler are welded together. the brackets are welded on tabs, front and back. the reason this confuses me so is that the collector is the 2 1/2" size. this means to me that it is for the later model buells and should fit mine, 2000 m2 w/new muffler bracket. if you still do not know what muffler i am talking about, i bought it from this website from the used parts page on this site, there is a picture available on this page if you look or do a search. hopefully someone can help me with this. i cleaned it up amd it looks awesome!! thanx again to all who can help... orngm2 dalmans3@yahoo.com |

orngm2, I have an idea that pre '99 and post '99 bikes had a different bend coming off the header to the muffler. I'm basing this on fitting a Supertrapp that was made for the earlier models, onto my '00 M2. I had to cut just over 1/4" out of the muffler side of the bend, to get the muffler to tuck in enough that it wouldn't hit the road before the footpeg. The fact the you have a 2-1/2" could mean that it was made to fit the '98 S1W. PPiA |

Hey Fresh. Jet-Hot has 2 grades of coating to choose from. For my big twin, I had my Hookers coated with the std temp coating and have had no problems. Like Blake, I got it done in black. The black isn't very durable and I have areas where the coating rubbed off very easily. Also the black has a rougher surface finish to promote faster heat dispersion. I inquired about the lack of durability and was told that the black is put over their Sterling coating and it doesn't bond as well as it does with the base metal. Oh well, I needed the cooling for sitting in traffic @ 110 deg F. And it really did wonders. I no longer get sunburn inside my thigh and calf. If you get the Sterling finish, which is still std temp, it is supposed to be much more durable plus it has the benefit of having a 3.2 RMS finish for faster exhaust scaveging. It isn't the wet chrome look, but it is very pretty. The other finish is called Jet Hot 2000 which will handle the really high temp stuff but it has the rough finish as well and only comes in grey. It's whole purpose is about heat dispersion. I last looked at Jet hot 2 years ago, maybe there are some more options now. I'd recommend them to everyone. The warranty is awesome too. They will refinish it at their cost once if you aren't happy. I think I only paid $250 to coat my headers, muffler, heat shields, mounting brackets and I did the intake in sterling. (I took a gander at keeping heat from creeping up to the carb.) Plus it resists corrosion and thermal breakdown of the base material 14X longer than chrome. |

Another link besides Jet-Hot would be hpcoatings. Besides headers they do other parts that are subjected to thermal abuse and also do cosmetic coatings too. http://www.hpcoatings.com |

Orange, If it the one I'm thinking of, it was a hand built muffler right? If so, the front mounting tab probably went to the motor side of the stock single grommet mount. If that's the case, you should be able to install it between the legs of the new "Y" mount against the inside grommet. You will need a spacer to take up the room to the outside grommet. The grommets float in the "Y" bracket. Hit them with a bit of silicon and wiggle them around with a screw driver or long bolt and they should come right out. You can then adjust as necessary. A small length of pipe or tubing should work for a spacer. You may even be able to use the stock spacer, just move the outside grommet in a bit. Good luck, let us know how it goes. I wish I could remember who sold that pipe. The classified's dont stay on the board too long, I couldn't find the ad. Hmmm, was it DynoDave? Brad |

I still have the Supertrapp IDS on my S3 with the race pipe. I re-welded it twice. My welder swears it will not break again, and it hasn't. The baffle is rattling around inside, I'll need to address that soon. Supertrapp sent me a new one but it has the elbow welded to the pipe. It will not work with the race pipe. . I think I'm going to go the Buell race muffler. I wonder if the current new SuperTrapp muffler, with the elbow welded on it, will work with the XB exhaust? |

btw, I had a plate welded to the front on the muffler and since I replace the front hanger with the 2001 unit, nothing has broken.

Henrik, here is a shot of the front of my ST IDS my welder put a bead all around the inlet first, than cut out a plate (donut) out of stainless and stitch welded it all around. It hasn't broken in over a year. BTW, I've been riding in the rain a lot, bike is dirty....
