September 25, 2007 Harley-Davidson Shuts Down Buell MX Bike Project Racer X has learned from one of the people hired by Buell to manage its new off-road/motocross bike program that the parent company, Harley-Davidson, has shut down the whole project. A press release is said to be coming as early as tomorrow. No other details were offered, other than the fact that everyone was shocked by the decision. |

I would have been a potential customer of Buell dirt bikes. It's a shame if true. |

Glitch, The "Skunkworks" patch would seem even more relevant given this news. MX was cover for 1125R? Did Erik visit Roswell recently? |

WTF, OVER???? IMHO, they should "shelve" this project until it's proven that the BMC can support <all> of it's product line fully, including the new 1125R as it brings increasing demand. "Cancelling" sounds too terminal- they should just sit back and watch BMW's effort for a while first. DAMMITALLL! Cmon, H-D, grow some balls and diversify the line! |

Definitely some mixed emotions...especially for those that already know what they're missing. Sounds like it was definitely Buell's decision to maintain focus on the XB lineup and 1125 platform. |

Probably just hard times at HDI. The 1125R project had the fortune of good timing. BMW/Huskvarna and KTM must be loving this. |

If it is true... its just another case of business being distracted by the need to paint stockholders a pretty picture. Perception over reality. Its all a game |

From CYCLE NEWS: “Buell has made the business decision to focus resources on its street motorcycle business, including continued development of the XB line and the launch of the all new 1125R superbike platform,” said Buell President and Chief Operating Officer Jon Flickinger. “Buell customers and dealers have expressed incredible excitement for the new 1125R superbike and our entry into the mainstream sportbike market.” I wonder what's going on? |

I believe the dirt bike was to cover up Buells dealings with Rotax as supplier for the 1125. We all knew that. BUT I would think that if the dirt bike was never really going to happen, I believe they would have killed off the story long ago. H-D has some splannin" to do! Not a real big shock though. |

Best guess is that the cash for Buell to develop the 1125 series of street bikes chewed up the now scarcer resources. Expect to see more bikes based on 1125R sooner rather than later. Also fewer than 20% of the dealers expressed interest in the dirt bike line. Look for a lot more Harley dealers to be selling KTM dirt bikes in the next few years. |

Could be with the downturn in sales (of HD)and the not too distant failure of the Cannondale that they didn't like the picture. |

Doesn't surprise me at all. Couldn't see how they could dive into an already flooded market of proven 400's, 450's 525's.... |

Big companies sometimes acquire or merge with others. If they have such thoughts about other companies then they try to keep their lines separate so that if they merge is will be completely complementary. Not sure this is the case with HD but it might be when you look at the global markets. It is very touchy misleading the public when you are a publicly traded company. I doubt the dirt bike was deception. HD may just want to keep to their knitting and the dirt bike is a bit of a stretch. |

That's a bummer. It would've been the first new Buell purchase for me. Oh well. After all that hype... |
