I have a 97 s3t with 40,000 miles and i do not think the carb has been modified. Under decel the engine pops through the exhaust. I can make it happen less if i give it a little throttle. Is this excess fuel? Any ideas? When should a carb be rebuilt? Thanks

I would first suspect an intake gasket leak. Easy to check and not too bad to fix.
Try a search in the knowledge vault for more info.

Your to rich. If you have a adjustable needle move the clip up one notch. If not a good cleaning might help.

Being too rich won't necessarily cause popping on decel, but being too lean will. Even the slightest intake leak can produce this popping.

I'd check those intake seals before messing with anything else.

Went to Donahue HD Buell and got all three seals. Removed old ones, rear seal was defintely leaking, weather checked all around. Front seal looked ok. Put everything back together and broke my choke cable housing. Back to the dealer they also had the cable assembly in stock, back home choke cable would not stay in place, found cable housing end came off (must have been improperly crimped0. Back to the dealer, they had another in stock (nice to have a good dealer) back home reinstalled everything, start the bike up warm it up , start down the road and it starts to downpour. It felt smoother in the short trip, can't wait to get a real test ride

Leaky exhaust header to cylinder head gaskets will cause popping on decel. Been there, done that. Check your header nuts for proper tightness at each cylinder head. Try to wiggle the header runners back and and forth. They shouldn't wiggle. Inspect the area around the cylinder head to header connection for evidence of an exhaust leak.

Ok I had the chance to put about thirty miles on it. The decel popping is about 50% gone. Seems to have smoother acceleration. The exhaust looks good no leaks to see everything tight. If i was to guess i think it runs a little rich, not the worst thing in the world, but i would like it perfect if possible. I have not been in the carb yet, i don't know if the previous owner did any work in there i don't think he did. Any ideas on what to do next??????
