KLX250S for the dirt. Sorry, a TT or Uly can't do what a dirt bike can....unless your eyelids are closed ! Though I did take my TT on a logging road until I got into some real rutty stuff and had to turn around. I could have cruised through that over 30 on my KLX. Like that country song goes...WHAT WAS I THINKING ? | ||

Jumpin, yes the Sherpa would be friendly in powerband as well as crash worthy. Hard to hurt them things. My nephew has one (14) and beats that thing mercilessly. I have had to replace tires and oil thats it. My .02 worth. | ||

My only other bike is a late sixties era pull start lawn mower powered mini bike. Coarse it's got a modern power mill,6.5 hp Honda. Wheelie monster it is. | ||

DD, where I ride I could put RC on a Uly and I'd leave him in the dust on my KLX. We're not talking gravel and dirt fireroads, we're talking moto tracks, trails, rocks, logs and hills that make your sphincter pucker. My dual sport, though outfitted with some D606 tires is still 260 lbs and that is PHAT for a dirt bike. A WR250 is around 230 and that 210 lb Husky takes dirt riding to a whole new level. I plan to put something like that in my stable soon. Don't get me wrong, when I'm touring in PA I won't pass up a dirt or gravel road on my TT, but when the trail turns to where the deer go....not going to happen on a 400+ lb pig without knobbies ! | ||

 Stretch easily takes the large adventure bikes where I have trouble getting a a KTM 640. I watch him slither past regularly.Awesome. Our magazine's pro stunt man. Depends who is riding them. ;-P | ||

I made the mistake last week of riding the KLR-250 all morning, then taking the 9sx for a ride in the afternoon. I was exploring some possible places to take the KLR, and got WAY over my head in the 9sx... quite the humorous moment. The hardest part was that I had to kill the engine (all the weight was on the back tire, the front would just lock instantly and I would slide backwards towards a drop off). I could then "back it down" with the clutch, clutch out for braking. (both feet needed to be on the ground). But thats opposite, my normal "pucker response" is clutch in, front brake on. But this pucker response had to be "clutch out". There were some fairly comical moments as I extracated myself. It would have been a no brainer on the KLR 250. That was a fairly defining moment for me to understand that an adventure bike can be remarkably flexible, but it ain't a dirt bike and never will be (and that's OK). | ||

Personally - I'm big and strong enough that If I could get some knobby tyres and a bash guard for it, I would take my Uly 90% of the places I can take a hard out dirt bike. Only thing stopping me is neither are available so I use that Scrambler for the Adventure rides and take it through the challenge sections. 'You can't do that Dave' 'Watch me'.  | ||

I have a picture of me on my '86 XL250 that looks just like that last picture where he is stuck in the sink hole. I was between some very large rocks in the upper Allegheny mountains in NorthWestern Pa. I also have an '85 ATC 200X. Did someone say wheelie time? | ||

The Pirelli MT-60's are a pretty nice knobby, I will have a set on the CityX this winter for muddin. You would not believe how many times I hear "you cant do that on that bike", my answer is , YOU wont ride that bike like that, but I WILL ;) I have the engine cage, and still debating putting it on. | ||

How much weight are those carriers good for? Would you put the 600 on there? Do they threaten the minivan? I'd love to have a lighter option then pulling a trailer to be able to take the KLR250 on vacations.... | ||

i've got a similar carrier to X1glider, it depends what brand and model you get Reepicheep. some are strong enough for sport bikes! the dirty bike models are much cheaper though, i got mine from www.justhitchit.com, it'll hold 400lbs.  | ||

Bill, I carried the 600 around on it for well over a year. It's about a 375 lbs wet machine, 390 complete with mud. Plus I (215 lbs) would stand on the thing while I was muscling the bike onto it as it had low ground clearance compared to the CRF450X. The X had plenty of ground clearance so it slides on nice and easy. Either way, they're all very easy to load up. The carrier mfr says to only carry 300 lbs. I believed they were being way too conservative. No problems yet other than a rusty shaft on the bottle jack, replaced with a stronger 10 buck unit from WalMart and spray it with chain lube to keep it clean. Sure beats plating and pulling the 5 X 8 trailer, which I sold...took away garage space reserved for my 2 wheeled toys. Now I just throw this rack in the back of the SUV to store it away. Bonus, the rack doubles as a work stand and you don't have to unload it while powerwashing the bike before going home. A worthwhile $300. | ||
