I better have my new tires on by the 23rd, in which case I need to scrub them in and break in the leathers before Mid Ohio. I made up this route:
Which includes many of my favorite Ohio roads: Rt 800 Rt 78 Rt 278 And many new roads, that appear to be curvy. I'm not particular though, I'm 100% open to suggestion. So I guess I posted this for a few reasons... The main one being I'M DYING HERE waiting on my new tires to come in. I haven't been riding much at all lately, since my current tires are bald. I'm putting conti sport attacks on right away, mainly for the track day... then I'm switching over to road attacks, for my everyday riding. I'll save the Sports for track days. Should... be... this... week... aarrrrggghhhhhh. I also posted this to see if anyone else wanted to go with me. Or see if anyone had road suggestions in Eastern Ohio. |

My tires should arrive sometime within the next week. Until then, I can't tell 100% if I am going to be able to do this ride on this date. Which is why I didn't set an official time/place yet. I live in Columbus, and was originally going to just take 70 East to Zanesville to start the loop at the top. If it would work better for others, I could take 56 East and start the loop from the bottom. Any opinions? Where should the meeting place be? Columbus? Or out at the beginning of the fun stuff? Or both? I want to go to Hooters, but I wouldn't make it till 8:30. We'll see. (Message edited by mikef5000 on September 11, 2007) |

RE: Ohio ride I ride in eastern Ohio around Woodsfield all the time. Here is a truly awesome twisty loop along the Ohio River (starting at the bridge to New Martinsville). I'm serious about the quality of this route. Not to be missed. Do be careful about gravel in the right-handers. 536 can be dirty in spots as can 147, but the left tire track is usually clean. 7 north (very short) to jct 536 L on 536 north to jct 78 R on 78 east back to Ohio River L on 7 north (very short) to jct 556 L on 556 to jct 145 in Beallsville R on 145 north to jct 148 R on 148 east to jct 9 in Armstrong Mills L on 9 north to jct 147 in Centerville R on 147 east to Bellaire So what's the deal about Mid-Ohio? Is there a Buell track day there? I'm interested in trading my Wee Strom and Kawi 636 for either a Uly or an 1125r (depending on ergos). |

I would imagine meeting somewhere on the east side of town or out near Buckeye Lake would be best. Earlier the better in my opinion. |

There is a Buell track day at mid ohio on October 4th, with 1125r demo's. I read somewhere that the 1125r's will have a demo weekend up there the weekend before the track day, but I have not been able to find that again. Can anyone confirm that? Thanks for the update on the loop! I will map that out, and definitely do it! I'm always looking for a better loop. What's the deal with gravel in corners here in Ohio??? It seems like about every other corner will have a bit strewn about. The only time I've gone down was from gravel in a corner, so I tend to go into panic mode whenever I see it. RE: Ohio Gravel From what I've seen over the years, ODOT intentionally puts gravel on the shoulders of many roads, perhaps to keep vegetation down or something. I've personally seen miles of fresh white gravel on the shoulders of the road. Of course this means that any traffic that cuts right-hand turns too sharply (mostly trucks) kicks gravel up on the road. The traffic that follows tends to clean out the tire tracks, leaving a pile in the middle of the lane at the entrance to the corner. If you stay in the (usually clean) left tire track and shoot for a late apex, you can be past much of the gravel before you turn in. Being in the left tire track is no biggie on rights since you are leaning away from traffic. Still have to be watchful for people crossing the double-yellow though. It's the blind rollers that get me in Ohio. Lots and lots of little humps in the road that give you no warning which way the road goes on the other side. Makes for a fun mental challenge. Just mind your speed and keep a bit in reserve to deal with the unexpected. |

Hey, Mike... I'm in! I was on OH 56 a couple of weeks ago and found plenty of gravel down there. As Garry suggested, it paid off to enter the corners slowly, check for gravel, deer, cagers, only then to pour it on. Oh, and put couches on the list. I was almost got off by a late model love seat in a curve on 564 South of 33 on my way to Old Man's Cave. The love seat had no pilot. She must have ejected. |

Hah! Man, you guys are right on! The blind rollers get me too! Mark was following me on 56 when I aaalmost laid it down. Just like you said, there was a big old heap of gravel right in the middle of the lane, which happened to be right in my path. I always tend to enter corners slow, then crack open the throttle and hit a late apex. Problem is I tend to mis-judge the corners, and enter too slow (better than too fast I suppose), then no matter how much throttle I give it, I don't get the lean I want. |

If you run to Cadiz, you'll be in my backyard. 250 is great except for the coal trucks and some gravel. 22 from Cambridge is a good one have to watch out for fisherman and they're boats goin to Piedmont. I know we can get around them though. |

Just a note on 536...it is quite technical with blind turns, decreasing radius turns, and elevation changes. I have seen several bikes run off. Take it easy your first couple times on 536. Check out www.coreriders.com this group rides SE OH all the time. (Message edited by tpoppa on September 12, 2007) |

Just a note on 536...it is quite technical with blind turns, decreasing radius turns, and elevation changes. That's what makes it so much fun. It is a technical and unforgiving road. BE CAREFUL. Not a road to push the envelope on. There are several turns with more than a little gravel in them. If you aren't asleep at the wheel, they are obvious. I think northbound is cleaner than southbound. With any luck, I will be doing close to 300 miles in that area on Saturday. Tpoppa: I've been Buell-curious since the XBs came out and a buddy at work bought an XB9R. Was seriously looking at Ulys last spring. Now I'm looking for one bike to replace the Ninja bike and the Wee Strom. So the Uly Multistrada and 1050 Tiger are back on the radar screen. But that new 1125r sounds very nice, especially with the sporty but sane ergos. SWMBO would not be pleased about the pillion accommodations though... (Message edited by garry on September 13, 2007) |

I've found 2 places now that say Rt 536 is Ohio's version of the Tail of the Dragon. Sounds excellent! |

Do we have a total # of riders yet for this ride? Where ya'll gonna meet and whats the route? I wont make it all, would like to meet up somewhere in the middle maybe. Like I said, if you'll be near Cadiz, its in my back yard more or less. I'd probably meet in Piedmont or even Cambridge. I know of a few good roads towards Steubenville. (thats home) we gotta watch the weather so if it does rain we'll know to look for washed out gravel too. In the rollers it gets bad cause it washes right down into the corners. If ya'll want to modify a bit, I could probably arrange a lunch at my place. |

Another route note, it looks like you're taking 565 and 260 to the Ohio River. My notes from last season are that they are bumpy and dirty. 260 cleans up a bit east of 26 to the river. That long slog along the river from 260 to 536 is pretty boring stuff. Considering your start point (Marietta area), I would suggest 145 north from Lower Salem to 78, 78 east to 536, then run 536 to the river and take 7 north to get to 556. In general, I prefer to run 536 northbound, but just did it southbound yesterday and aside from 3 or 4 dirty corners, it's in good shape. And the remaining 556w, 145n, 148e, 9n, 147e section is just amazing (did that yesterday too). What an awesome bit of riding. Better have your game face on for those roads. |

I rode 536-78-556 yesterday as described by Garry. KickAss roads. Just watch for gravel, cow pies and the occasional Amish on their horse and buggy. |

If you ride 800 south till it ends at OH 7 at Fly you can take the ferry across the Ohio river river to Sistersville, WV. Rt. 2 north to Glen Dale, WV, home of Brad Paisly and eat at Hocutt's BBQ. (My stomping grounds) Been seeing a group of Harley riders from Columbus eating there the past few weekends. |

Lost, are you gonna make it? I dont know if anyone else is but i can ride your way and maybe you come this way. We can then find a few good roads on our own. I do know some fun stuff out my way as well as yours. The roads in the route shown arent bad either. Kinda takes us both off our home turf though. Let me know. |

Normally I do get them from the Pony... but this time through a secrit contact, I was able to get a set of conti sport attacks and a set of conti road attacks, all for less than a single new tire from the pony. So I'm willing to wait a couple weeks. |

Okay, new rule...dont start a thread about a ride you cant attend. LOL!! I did part of the run on 78 800 and part of 556. I did have a few gravel scares but nothing to deter me from riding them again. Tied them together more or less by running route 7 south and then back north to my place. 78 out by Caldwell was cool and 800 was wide open in spots. You could see the corners coming at you from miles away. Hope to see ya'll at Mid-O for the Buell day. |
