I have searched but haven't found the procedure detailed on here. Planning on getting a manual sometime soon, but I am over due for my 1k change now.

Is it on here anywhere?

Warm it up to operating temp, 10 min ride should do. Empty fluid. Replace with HD Syn3 20/50 or Formula + or Mobil1(I use HD, some use Mobil, many discussions on this). 1 quart only, don't overfill. Should also replace the o-ring on the plug.

You should check the primary chain tension at this point also.

UPDATE.

USE SYN3.

I am fighting a serious clutch problem that seems to have been caused by Formula+. I've never used Mobil because it can cause problems with the stator.

I also have an 03 XB9S.

Mobil 1 engine oil works excellent in the tranny.

Just don't use GL-5 gear oils (no matter who makes it) unless it's ok'd by the oil company, like Redline does.

Yeah, the stator eater is the Mobile 1 gear oil. Haven't heard of stator failure with the 20w50 syn.

Just in case you weren't sure, you take of the clutch cover and pour the oil in through there.

Alright, warm up, pull plug (I assume its up under the exhaust...haven't looked yet), pull clutch cover, replace plug, add 1qt of HD Syn3 20w50.

Is there no way of checking level?
Just dump 1qt and call it good?

Has anyone tried Amsoil 20w 50 in the primary. I am thinking I would like to give it a shot.

Jfoster, to be sure your level is correct. Level the bike and see if the lube just submerges the primary gear teeth. 1 quart should do exactly that. Hope that made sense.

Amsoil 20w50 synthetic (the cheaper one, not the V-twin formula), which is compatible with tranny (JASO MA - without friction enhancers), works great. I tried, mobile 1 syn, mobile 1 gear lube, as well as non-syn 20w50. In my opinion, Amsoil seems to work the best. For engine, I use the Amsoil 2000 racing formula (JASO-MB - has friction enhancers)

I replaced mine a couple months back. Broke my clutch cable and figured might as well. I warmed her up for about 5 minutes. Put it in Neutral. Dumped the transmission fluid. Put the plug back in. Took off the cover on upper left of primary case. I used the Formula + fluid from American Sport Bike. I did dump just a little out of the quart before i put it in. Put the cover back on with a new gasket. Pull your clutch a couple times and go through your gears while its shut off. And your good to go. It has shifted way better since then. Good luck

After my second stator in 40thousand miles, I learned about Mobil1 gear oil. Better late than never.
When I replaced the second stator, I started using Formula+ exclusively.

I am fighting a serious clutch problem that seems to have been caused by Formula+.
I'm wondering if you're not having clutch problems caused by something else.
I also have an 03 XB9S, and have been using Formula+ for more than 20thousand miles.
I'm still riding with the original stock clutch as well.

formula+ is to be used with the newer "lighter" clutch springs. Like on new buells. So it should grip good. right?

Yeah I'd be interested for sure. We do these tear downs all the time and have a pretty good idea of what caused the effect by inspecting the aftermath.

Using HD SYN3 in my 06 City X in both engine and tranny for 8000Kms so far, no problems.

never once had a problem running syn 3 in either of my buells.......
