crank position sensor wire had a break in it. when i pushed in on the pin with a voltmeter, it made a connection and tested good, but when released created an open in the wire. |

Ouch, those type opens are very tough to find. |

Dan- Did you get a code from your problem? Here's what I've gone through with my '99 S3 that started surging the runs terrible. So far no luck but I think I have it narrowed down. 1) Compression test - 130#ea. - ok 2) Replace intake seals 3) New spark plugs 4) New fuel filter 5) Fuel pressure - ok 6) Check all connectors - ok 7) Check plug wires, coil, spark at both plugs - ok 8) Head temp sensor - ok 9) Reinstall stock ecm - same problem So it still runs like crap so I start it up and check each cylinder head temp with temp gauge, hmm, front - 140deg, rear - 210deg, check exhaust pipes, same results. I'm thinking maybe I have a bad injector. |

Mike, O2 sensor could be belly up. It controls low-mid operation. |

Dnchevyman, did you get a trouble code/engine light? I have been trying to figure out my similar problem for weeks now on my 99 x-1. Cheers, Mark |

Mark, List what you've done and maybe we can give some insight. Since I wasn't getting any codes I started with the easy & cheap things first. I figured out it was the front cylinder when the head & pipe wasn't getting very hot when it ws running. After I put a spare plug on the front wire with a ground lead attached I could see a spark so I figured it must be the injector. I then cleaned them and it worked for awhile then acted up again. I swapped front to rear and the problem went to the rear so I knew it had to be the injector. Ordered new ones, $66/ea. so I hope I made the right diagnosis and should know Monday after they come in. I had already gone through most of the connectors cleaning and greasing them. Didn't find any broken or frayed wires, just a couple of connectors with a little corrosion on them. |

So why is it that when the bank angle sensor goes bad it doesnt flash a code? Pulled the BAS and the bike fired right up. Thanks to all for the help. Cheers, Mark |

That's a good question, Mark. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a simple description available of how the EFI software interacts in general with the rest of the vehicle, moreso than what's in the FSM? |
