things aren't going so good on the rebuild. they got it back together, it started up fine, sounded great, had a pressure gauge on it to check oil pressure(pressure fine), took it out for a little test ride, heard some noise and shut it down. took the oil pump out and it had froze up again. looks like they'll have to split the cases to see what got sucked through or chipped off to freeze up the pump again. while it's split would it be a good idea to put the 6 speed in there or just a waste of time. this is getting a little frustrating on not having the cyclone back. | ||

If I'm not mistaken, you don't have to split the cases to install a 6-speed in the "older" bikes, although a bit of machining is required. So, you can do it later once the engine is sorted out. Sorry to hear of your rebuild troubles! | ||

Unless you do some motor work,your stock motor wont have the power to use the six gear anyway.I recall some european riders talking of the stock motor not being able to pull all the way thru 5th gear with the european front and rear sprockets. | ||

the bike already had some motor work done to it and it will be going back as was pretty much but for the price of the 6th gear, i'll just stick with the 5 and keep on tryig to find that 6th in my head(always looking for a fifth gear right now) | ||

The idea with sixth gear was to lower RPM in final so you could cruise at 80 at about 3000. Firemanjim probably knows better as I think he runs the six in his bonny-bike. Did'nt know you had to do any machining for it though. | ||

Sure it will pull sixth,Baker trans has different ratios--Baker site says 2-5th gearing same as stock, giving a lower first and an overdrive 6th(I could be wrong but believe it is a .90 approx) but not by as much as if you put on the euro gearing--29/55--(1.88)compared to US gearing--27/61(2.26). It's no wonder they can't pull fifth into a breeze.If you shop you can find em cheaper. I have one in my S-2 and it shifts like a breeze and makes freeway cruising at 80 almost too easy. | ||

i could see where you'd like to have it on the salt flats but maybe i was just wishful thinking on how nice it might be. not that i want to spend alot of time on the freeway or anything. i'm just trying to think outloud as to what i might do to it since their gonna have to split the cases so i get a little better running bike than what it was to begin with. | ||

Windage tray is a sheet metal piece in the crank case to "peel" off the oil from around the flywheel to reduce drag, improve oiling, etc. H-D motors have a very small crankcase volume & the bits that spin inside don't have much clearance. Oil tends to spin around the crank like a demented washing machine, slowing everything down & not getting picked up by the oil return system. Balancing the crank is a arcane ritual involving animal sacrifice and fixtures not usually found in nature. ( Crank with rods & pistons is put in 19th century equipment, there is drilling of the flywheels & re-checking involved. Actual operator skill needed. ) The Baker 6 speed kit needs a small bit of aluminum ground out of the cases to give clearance for the extra gear. A steel guide is included, to be bolted on to the case to show you where to cut. A die grinder/drill/dremel tool is used. Not all that hard, make sure to stuff the area with rags & clean chips up with serious clean freak attitude. http://www.bikernet.com/garage/xl6-1.asp | ||

Love my baker six speed. Better first, 2800 gets me 70 mph. Shifts better just don't have a lot of miles on it. Joe |
