Hey gang:
I bought my Uly in May, it only has 180 miles on it. Went out today and it would not and still won't start at all. On top of that, the more I learn about the dealership who sold me the bike, the more I despise them. Court has lent me his ear to chew on about them more than enough. I am not mechanically inclined, so I don't even know where to start diagnosing it. I took off the seat to check the battery, and I noticed that the screws holding the air cover on have all been stripped bare, and having never touched them myself, it was just the straw that broke the camel's back. No bike for the weekend, no way to get the air box off....
Any thoughts on how to proceed to diagnose why it just cranks and won't start? Yes, it has gas.

Thanks and sorry for the rant.
Gug

Sorry for your woes!! I think every one will agree the bikes are far better then the dealers.....

Did the dealer already have the airbox off at only 180 miles???

For the starting issue when you key on the ignition do you hear the fuel pump(hard not to if its working)

Do all the lights come on???

Maybe the clutch safety switch is acting up...

Possible Bank Angle Sensor....

As for the stripped screws I think they are stainless, maybe someone can confirm, which makes it a little tougher. Usually a flat head jammed in there tight does the trick for me and if that doesnt work most auto part stores carry "Easy Outs" drill bits.

Good luck!!!

PS...Just realized it was you!
guess you havent been able to try the low seat out, That sucks!!!!!
Casey

Hypermoto-
Hey Bro, thanks for the reply. Seat is great. Yeah, I've had it since like 6 miles, and never had anything off but the seat, and that's how the bolts look. Do you have any idea what the specs or part number for those things are? I noticed they don't have the plastic washers either. Also, are they supposed to have threadlock?

As for your questions: All the lights are on, when I turn the key I get the dials moving and the little whirring sound for a sec, I guess maybe that's the pump.

Thanks bro!

This is going to sound stupid, try cracking the throttle about a 1/16th of a turn. When my TPS was off it would fire right up.

Its simple and can do no harm.

Madduck-
No luck. Thanks for the tip.
I seem to be search inept today as I can't find it, but didn't someone recently post a list of equivalent plug and air cleaner numbers that fit the Uly?
thanks

Update-
Today as I was leaving for class I gave it a try and it did the turning over but nothing else, then amazingly, it coughed and sputtered to a start. It was idling, but a very rich smelling and sick sound, almost coughing and any attempt to raise the rpms killed it.

So, I picked up some plugs from a different dealer, along with some replacement bolts for the stripped ones I found on the airbox cover and will attempt the change tomorrow. Wish me luck. Any other suggestions besides the plugs? Could I have gotten some bad gas? Any thoughts on an additive I can put through it till what's left burns out of the tank?

You can siphon out the bad gas. You can buy a siphon hose with a little bladder pump connected, cheap at Harbor Freight stores...When you start the bike do not give it any gas on start up or the warm-up idle period...Just turn the key, watch the gauges move over and back then start...no gas.

With only 180 miles in ~4 months, the bike probably hasn't been ridden enough to keep the battery charged. I'd charge the battery overnight before I did anything else. A weak battery can cause all kinds of weird symptoms.

Hughlysses- Check. First thing I did, sorry I forgot to mention it. I suspect that was part of helping it finally start.

Gug,

Glad to hear it. Hopefully fresh plugs will fix it up. Be sure NOT to blip the throttle until it gets fully warmed up. That will almost invariably cause the plugs to fowl.

I have to agree with Hughlysses on the weak battery issue. The dealer and i chased problems for months until I took it upon myself to replace the battery. it was the best $75.00 I ever spent. It wasn't covered under warranty because it didn't meet spec for a "dead" battery.

I think the 06's had a lot of marginal batteries.
