So if the mini cat has no effect on performance and the models going to Europe and California have them why bother having a separate muffler for the other 49 states? In a couple years they are going to have it anyways and 49 state bikes would be putting less crap in the air. Wouldn't you save money by having one muffler and fuel calibration for all the bikes instead of 2?

Don't think so, Greg.

That "hot foot" syndrome, IMO (important point, that) was more a factor of different fuel mapping. The course of the week saw various revisons of mapping. Bottom line? I believe the bikes at the end of the week ran better than those at the start.

Please keep something in mind when you read stuff like this from me:

I, at times, have been privileged to have information that is confidential. I value the confidence that is placed on my integrity. As such, I will never reveal this info. Therefore, when you read an opinion such as the above, it results from my personal observations and information that is freely given for distribution. Insider info is a powerful asset, but if it is treated properly, it is a bit more than restricting. Quite frankly, I don't understand how some continually get away with revealing stuff they shouldn't.

And when I say "shouldn't" I mean they are ethically bound by a confidentiality agreement. A true investigative journalist never signs such an agreement.

Court...nice pic

Does that pic mean that the 1125r is in production now? or are those still "pre-production" bikes? when did you take that pic? at homecoming maybe?

which one is MINE?

Thanks Reg. I understand your position. I have had, and worked with people in, Top Secret Security positions. Some take it seriously, others just don't get it.

Though it is not without risks I believe, from a testing standpoint, Buell has gained tremendous benefit from the Laguna press event.
Turning a couple of dozen unpaid "test riders" loose with your bikes will reveal issues factory test riders might not reveal in years.
This is not to say the factory test riders are lacking in any way. The truth is factory test riders can be too competent.

Two dozen press guys, of varying skill levels, will likely find ways of "testing" the bikes in ways a factory rider never would. Down loading info from on board electronics will then give you some clues as to how to improve the product.

Ditto.
Getting 60+ of the world's toughest critics to create a list of cons on the pre production bikes was pretty clever.

And it was done early enough to allow time to address them all. There's still over a month left to dial things in.

I won't be surprised if the actual production bike gets a very good write up : )

I think it is because the platinum and rhodium make the cats fairly spendy.

I'm sure they did all kinds of math, and came to the conclusion that building 2 bikes with cats and the rest without came out cheaper than building all the bikes with a cat.

I have my suspicion this is why the Uly doesn't work well at 15 mph.

Sorry, you were laughing so hard at the last one I had to say it.
Feel free to quote me on both.

Seriously guys, be happy for the pollution control laws.

1) Air is bad enough in most urban areas, even with the improvements we've had in the last 30 years.

2) Research in combustion efficiency has probably been accelerated by pollution control laws. Remember the scary fast Z1? It put out 76 crank horsepower. Cars and bikes just keep getting faster and running better.

I think we get bummed about pollution control equipment because of the crappy job the American manufacturers did in the 1970s and 1980s of building drivable cars that met emissions laws. Things have changed a lot since then.

3) Bikes put out as much pollution per mile traveled as 10 cars in with the current emissions limits, and have 1/10th the sophistication and cost of auto systems. Bike still get big breaks due to the lower production numbers and price points.

4) The carbon canister and free flowing cats do not rob any power. They can add a little weight.

5) Dirty air sucks.

As of the week before the 1125R wasn't on the production line as of yet. Those pics that Court took must of been preproduction bikes for the journalists that were built on the 1125R line..... as to what I was told.

Yes, but they multiply faster than the rest of us, so they should be fine even with Darwnian attrition.

Jim, you certain it wasn't all XB's that were delayed? It's been a while, so my memory is foggy, but I remember going to the dealer training in Vegas (thanks Reg) and then coming home and waiting... and waiting... and waiting for the first bikes to ship. I recall all the bikes being delayed for updates to the belt tensioner, etc...
