I took a look at an m2 today. I really like and will probably get it. I just have to talk to my insurance agent tomorrow. Only problem is there's some kind of mount on the frame that's not being used, and its not like Erik to have something for no purpose. I'd like to know what its for and if its a problem or not.

That's supposed to be a heim joint between the front of the engine and the lowest part of the tube frame. If that is missing, I would steer clear of this bike altogether as the previous owner must be a massive tool for taking it off. |

I had one of those aircleaners on mine for about twenty minutes. Positioned right where my knee wanted to be; drove me freakin' bonkers! |

Hi. Are you really missing this link?

If that mount is broken out of the case I'd steer clear of it. There's only three or four of those (depending on the year). That's one of the main three which really needs to be there! |

That's the heim joint that you are missing and it's important for it to be there. It keeps the Buell's motor vibrating in a vertical plane. More then likely it vibrated loose. It would be a simple matter to replace the missing parts. I would suggest you take it to the Buell dealer to have his mechanic install them but I've not had good results with Buell mechanics. Also I installed all my Heim joints myself since I put together my Frankenstein Buell. I've had no problems with belt drive alignment so far. If you like contact me and I'll send you the part numbers. |

Nik, if that is one of the salvage titled bikes I'd have someone look it over very carefully to check for any other "missing" or broken stuff that might have been overlooked. Xldevil, how do you like that rear shock/spring/suspension setup? That's the push type conversion, isn't it? Kdkerr2, If you don't mind, could you send me the list of part numbers as well? Thanks. |

"If that mount is broken out of the case I'd steer clear of it." This is the key info here... if the case is cracked at the mounting point or the threads there are buggered, stay away. I doubt the link vibrated off. Another thing is... if the engine starts, there should be oil coming out of the exposed mounting hole (it's 'wet'). Unless it's been plugged, the oil leak should really be noticeable. |

Here are the part numbers for the missing tie bar: Tie Bar Assembly 16219-79B Spacer L0163.5A Clamp Clutch Cable 38646-97Y The spacer goes between the tie bar and the crankcase. I just listed the Buell proprietary part numbers. The rest are all just nuts, bolts and spacers you can purchase at the hardware store. The one that goes into the crankcase should have maximum penetration. Use grade 5 or better hardware. The crankcase bolt is a 3/8-24 NF. The parts manual calls for a flat washer and lock washer under the bolthead on the crankcase bolt. I also used a 3/8-24 NF bolt on the frame end of the tiebar. The clutch cable clamp is optional but I run one since I think it's better then a ziptie however zipties will do the job. Use blue loctite on both bolts and apply specified torques. |

The clutch cable stay is there and the hole in the crankcase is plugged with a bolt. It's been ridden like that for two years and 7k miles... Can anyone tell me where the other two/three are? It seemed really solid otherwise. I think I'm going to get it inspected by someone who knows Buells a lot better than me though... |

If it's been ridden like that for several years I'd suspect there may be other impending failures lurking just out of sight. There's another link up topside between the cylinders and the gas tank. |

Can't give you any advice on going any further, but that was a hell of thing you noticed - good call on your part. That may not be the bike for you, but you might be the right kind of guy to own a Buell. |

Would you mind telling us what sort of price the owner is asking for it? That might help put this all into some perspective. (And if the price is over $3,500 with a salvage title I may have to start advertising my M2 on the SandyEggo craigslist.) |

He's asking $2500 obo... I figure that the parts alone aren't worth much less than that. And this missing-link gives me bargaining power. It's sinking in that this may not be the Buell for me though. I've wanted one since I was 10. Erik Buell is one of the reasons I decided to become an Engineer... |

This one sounds okay for $3,500: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/21/ 301896.html?1188393690 Another M2 recently sold for some unknown amount, last posted price was under $3,500. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/21/ 299457.html?1188167415 Here's a wicked S2 for $6,000 or so http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/21/ 300572.html?1187655983 $4,500 would probably get you mine, I'm a little stubborn on the price, but I'd work with you on getting it to you. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/21/ 296142.html?1188267183 Without seeing it in person it's hard to say what a good deal it is or is not. |

Can't say why, but seems like most all the used Cyclones on Craigslist are in NorCal. There must be 5 of them for $3500 or less. Some look a LOT better than that one sounds, might be worth a trip, hard to say. Broken and not fixed motor mount...too many good ones around to take a chance (for me!) |

One tie bar is located atop the swingarm mounting block and the other's in between the two heads. I run the one under the steering neck too but apparently Erik Buell decided that one was no longer needed. I'm afraid that if this bike has a salvage title it's beginning to look to me like it was put together by some redneck who didn't know what he was getting into. I would be worried about whether or not he got into the engine or the transmission, too! |

Unless you really know what to look for in a salvage bike, I'd run the other direction. Get a nice cheap M2 for around $3500 and ride the with some comfort in knowing everything is in the right place. If that tie-bar is missing, there could be other issues that haven't come to light yet (like the front motor mount!) |

My spidey-sense is tingling, walk away from the wrecked Buell. Find something without any missing parts. My .02 worth. |

Xldevil, how do you like that rear shock/spring/suspension setup? That's the push type conversion, isn't it? Hi. Look here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/197732.html?1149229670 http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/205923.html?1152082037 I really love that shock! I'm sure it is the best single improvement one can do to the bike's handling. Ralph |
