I'm currently looking at two tubers for my first Buell. 1st is a 2001 M2. Has 18k and a salvage title. Apparently the original PM wheels were damaged and that was enough to total it out. Easy fix. Current owner put 7k on it since rebuild. New tires, new brakes, rebuilt forks. Needs nothing. 2nd is a 1998 S1W. Has 12k and a clean Cali title, but the seller was honest about it being salvaged out of state. Has rebuilt forks and carb, a few aftermarket goodies, all recalls, chain conversion. Needs a new flyscreen. Bodywork is black and white. Needs a new flyscreen. A little more than the M2. Current owner put 3.5k on it since rebuild. Right now I'm leaning towards the M2... but a white lightning does appeal to me. |

What're you going to do with it? Are you more interested in performance or comfort? The S1 handles better, but the M2 hurts less. |

Is there any way to see if they are bent before he buys one? (I vote M2. BTW) |

The S1 handles better, Not the arrow Kimosabe it's the Indian. I have placed top time once and top 10 in Battle trax many a time on a M2. You will have more ground clearence on a S1 but a little extra hang off can cure anything |

American Sport Bike is in my backyard... Maybe I could have them do some kind of inspection. I'd want it to be an all arounder. I don't moto-commute at the moment, but I have in the past and probably will in the future. I'm not hardcore in the canyons either, but I have fun. Makes me think the m2 would be the best bike overall. |

I have to excuse myself (M2) from the selection board (M2) because I have the best (M2) tuber (M2) Buell (M2) ever sold (M2), but it sounds like (M2) you got it (M2) figured (M2) out already. |

As an owner of both an M2 and S1 (see my profile pic)... I can tell you that the M2 is a better all around bike ... |

I have placed top time once and top 10 in Battle trax many a time on a M2. And I've done very well at Battle Trax on my S3T. But the S1W still handles better in the twisties (just not so good at Battle Trax "speed"). Nik: If you're looking for an all arounder, get the M2. The seat on the S1W was designed by some S&M freak as a pure torture devise. |

Not the arrow Kimosabe it's the Indian. ..... a little extra hang off can cure anything +++1 .. In addition - on an M2 - a set of peg risers along with that extra hang off will work well as well... (I'd also say adding an X1/S3 front end (99 and later Showa inverted forks) adds nicely to handling) |

I would lean toward the M2, it is versatile in addition to being the finest piece of machinery ever devised by man... Other than that a close decision... |

I second the advice on the frame check...if you had a good dealership they could measure the geometry |

The seat on the S1W was designed by some S&M freak as a pure torture devise. Umm .. I kinda like the seat on the S1 - with the lack of plastic on the bike, heat likes to cook the rider, the narrow seat at least allows more air when at speed to flow to umm .. areas ... Either that or I'm just weird ... |

> Not the arrow Kimosabe it's the Indian. I'm reasonably sure he's buying a Buell and not an Indian. Stock-for-stock and riders being equal, an S1 handles better than an M2. It has more aggressive steering geometry, inverted forks, and better ground clearance. I think there's also a difference in rear shocks? At any rate, my M2 came with a 98 S1 shock on it, but the previous owner never did answer when I asked him why. > I'd want it to be an all arounder. You want an M2 then. You'll appreciate the more comfortable seat and lower footpegs. Be warned, though, these are bikes for gear heads. If you don't like wrenching, then you won't enjoy owning a tuber. One more piece of advice: find a bike with at least 10k miles on it. By that point, all of the small things that usually break or leak should have been taken care of. |

I'm not so sure the S1 has different geometry than an M2. I question how noticeable the difference is as well .. ground clearance is listed as the same on each bike ... 5.2" - pegs are only lower on the M2 - so we'll say the lean angle is different, but that is considered soft contact anyway, handlebars are basically in the same position as well (an inch or so wider on the S1..) seat height is the same at 29.5" wheel base is the same at 55" M2 trail is 3.8", 24.5 degree rake .. S1 trail is 3.9", 25 degree rake ... and IMHO that difference between the 2 is not nearly enough for someone other than a pro racer or very experienced rider to notice .. interesting note -- the S1 is heavier by 11 pounds .. WHAT??? I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!! YOU'RE BIKE IS TOO LOUD Huh ? What was that ? ... funny thing is .. my bike is actually now a quiet one .. not the obnoxious one in the group anymore .. as of 2 weeks ago she is now fitted with a complete Buell Race Exhaust ... (don't worry - she still looks mean !!!) (Message edited by tattoodnscrewd on August 28, 2007) |

>Be warned, though, these are bikes for gear heads. If you don't like wrenching, then you won't enjoy owning a tuber. This would be my first bike that wasn't old enough to vote. I have a mechanically restored 75 Vespa Rally 200, a bare 77 rally frame that I'm building into a racebike (yes, a race scooter...) and a POS old suzuki that I'm going to sell after I'm done painting it. I was first looking at financing an XB but I was honestly worried I'd get bored with never having to work on it... Thanks for all your help. |

My biased opinion is the X1. Aggressive like the early S models yet more refined and advanced. If you can find a 2002, it has all the upgrades. The M2 is not far enough removed from the Sportster for my liking. Don't get me wrong, they are all great bikes. I would love to have several, but if it has to be one, for me it's the X1. |

But he is considering one of two ... an S1W or an M2 ... and the year M2 he is looking at is pretty far removed from the Sporty (Thunderstorm engine) .. if he had said pre 99, I'd agree ... (Message edited by tattoodnscrewd on August 28, 2007) |

Thanx Tat, I didn't go all the way back. In that case I go with the S1W. I also noticed both bikes have salvaged titles. Unless you are a pretty good wrench, I would avoid both. If it has to be one of them. The M2 being an '01 should be more reliable, though maybe not as visually appealing. |

Why only salvage bikes? Is the price that good? Other wise I'd stay away. |

Well, salvage title can mean anything though. When I wrecked my first M2, it had a broken shifter, a bent left handlebar, and some rash and the insurance company totaled it out. I could have fixed it, but I was too busy cashing the check that they wrote to replace it. Enter the S1W... (Message edited by crashbuell on August 29, 2007) |

The S1 hurts you a$$ but is a HOOT to ride. They make you do bad things and enjoy it... The M2 is a much better all around bike. I wish mine wasn't broken... (bad crank). Brad |

I disagree with sanchez,I have a 98Si and a 02m2 the m2 handles way better although the s1 had better acceleration |

M2 = All Around Road Bike S1 = Hooligan Bike M2 = All Around Hooligan Road Bike S1 = more raw meat M2 = more meat period S1 = sure I can get there M2 = I can get there with out my shorts bunching up S1 = An engine in a frame with a bicycle seat M2 = An engine in a frame with a little more dressing S2 = S1 + M2 My M2 is available, open to creative horse trades, not a salvage title even though it has been down once and repaired. Brad, bad crank? That hurts. |

ROFL!!!!! Ditto...I LOVE my M2. Even when she doesnt love me back. Those times are few and far between though, so dont let it influence your decision. Throw the $ aspect to the side cuz the $ will get spent either way. The cash you save wont be any consolation if you didnt get what you really want. The end result of your spending will be what really matters, no matter what the price. Bottom line...buy what YOU want, what strikes you as being the epitome of a badass bike, but above all...ITS A BUELL, AND THATS WHAT MATTERS! Welcome to the family, bro! You cant go wrong either way, its all in what you want. I'm gonna be looking to a Uly or TT after I learn to ride my X1 well. I love it, intoxicating torque. Hard to travel with. (hard seat) I second the thought of being a gearhead. My bike needed nothing but I still work on this thing all the time. Just my way I suppose. Glad to have you here, lot of great folks and good info. All you gotta do is ask, everyone is really helpful. Save the drama for somewhere else though. ( advice only, not meant to offend you ) |

The S1W is the essence of the Buells in the tuber era. If you want to know what it is, there is where you should start. The M2 and S3 add additional capabilities to the tubers. Joe |

I've had both and I love each for different reasons. I don't like the tail section on the new gen. cyclones, but I appreciate the fact that when they widened it that the seat improved. I look at Cyclones as a blank canvas. They are just ok when stock, but you can do a million things to improve them and make them into the bike that you want. If I was in your shoes, I would opt for the S1W because you can always buy a corbin seat for it. I did and it solved any comfort issue with the bike. The other aspects of the bike were great. Awesome looks, smokin' performance. There has never been a tuber before or since that looked the part of a hooligan bike more so than the S1W. IMHO. |
