I got a transdapt oil cooler adaptor that mounts behind the oil filter. It is supposed to only flow oil through the filter at 160 then full flow at 180. This would be done by the heat weaking the spring and allowing the ball bearing to become unseated. What confused me is the adapter design. Towards the engine adapter side the oil has a direct path to flow through the oil cooler. It is the only route the oil can take to get. The ballbearing (thermostat) is very small and just looks like it would only act to allow the hot oil to bypass the oil cooler. Once the spring gets hot it would allow the psi to push the ball down and the incoming oil would push right past it and to the filter side. Or am I wrong about the oil flow direction?

The blue line is the most/only direct and most free flowing route for the oil to flow. It must flow throught the cooler then back in to the top inlet. At that point it would be able to flow through the filter. Through the filter media then return via the center nipple. Once the oil gets hot or oil PSI is great enough it would simply push down the red circled ball bearing and pass straight to the filter inlet. Bypassing the oil cooler. |

I was gonna say, things weren't making sense there. Hot oil get pushed through the filter instead of the cooler? And cold oil doesn't get filtered? Glad you solved your own problem ;) |

All of the oil would have gotten filtered. Just that there was no thermostat. And the adaptor had a saftey bypass that would allow some (small) amount of oil to bypass the oil cooler if the PSI was too great. Like a crimped oil cooler line. |
