Should I use the recommended HD transmission fluid? I'm pretty sure I've seem some suggest using regular 20-50 synth. Whatever I use, my inclination is to use synthetic. Please share your advice and experience. Thanks! |

Bitbear: just replaced mine today, I used RedLine 75w90 synthetic, recommended by someone I trust. If you have any trouble getting the drain plug back in after draining your tranny use a butter knife to lift the plug into the grooves then turn. Be sure not to cross thread. It was a pain in the arse to get back in. I have the stock muffler, it has a recess area for the plug, and you need baby fingers to work with the space it provides! |

If you want the lastest and greatest you must get: HARLEY-DAVIDSON Transmission and Primary Chaincase Lubricant PART NUMBER 99851-05 !! It is on the level of DEXTRON V(5) and the moving parts really spin faster(easier) than with the heavy weight lubircants ... |

20W-50 Synthetic, your choice. Buellistic, thats a good reason to use the engine lube on the other side of the seal also. There has been alot of discussion on the board about using the 75W-90 Synthetic as there was an issue with the lube being bad on the wires for the stator. |

Swampy I did some more research on that it seems that the issue was with Mobile 1 75W-90 and special additives. I also came across a really cool article: http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g2156.pdf |

sulfur was part of the problem if i remember right. same issue as diesel fuel in modern engines. i've used mobil1 vtwin 15/50 for 10,000 miles now and have no issues what-so ever (Message edited by xgecko on August 28, 2007) |
