My '06 Uly still has the OE breakaway style stand. So far its still in one piece! Its a bit of a pain to get to the dealer so...I was thinking since the '08 Uly stand is the improved unit can I just order it from Andy and put it on myself? That way I would not need to worry about the stand giving way. Thanks! |

I think you'll have to remove the muffler to replace the stand. Chime in if I'm wrong. |

EG1997, I believe you are correct regarding the removal of the muffler for mounting bolt clearance. Just wanted to be sure that the '08 stand was a direct replacement. So...is it? Thanks, David |

Call a couple of dealers and ask for the part numbers for each year/model stand. If the numbers are the same... well there you go. The muffler must be removed or lowered to get at the bolts. If you do this yourself, make sure to replace the old bolts with new bolts (Buell bolts are fine.) The Buell bolts should have dry thread locking compound (orange/red) already on them. So no loctite is necessary |

BMWDavid, If your 06 has the recalled stand installed I wouldn't worry about it. If it doesn't have the recalled stand installed, then I would get it fixed pronto. Either way, I don't think that you have to go the 08 stand. If your bike had the recall installed it should be fine. If you decide to do the job yourself you will need to remove the muffler so review the procedure before you start in the big blue book and make sure that you have a new muffler clamp as well. |

Windrider, I don't have the update. Still running with the OE stand from '06. I know I'm playing with fire using the original stand. Every time I get on the bike I worry it will break as I mount the Uly by stepping up on the left footpeg. That would hurt if it broke at that moment. Me thinks I'll order the '08 stand pronto! Thanks, David |

I'm a little over 5' 7" almost 5'8" and I have never figured out why some one other then a passenger would stand on the left peg to mount with the stand down. Maybe for the time being it would be better to do a moving mount off the left peg. You wouldn't have to worry about the stand braking and you leg and groin breaking with it that way. I'm not trying to pick on anyone just trying to save a few aches looming on the horizon. |

BMWDavid, I also use a rider's footpeg to mount but I get on from the right. I adjust my center of gravity such that I unweight the sidestand and compress the suspension just a bit. It's not a balancing act as the sidestand stays on the ground. I do that even with the upgraded sidestand bolt. |

Bertotti, I need to use the left peg to mount if I'm in full gear, as i can't lift my leg as high. I can mount without the peg in normal clothing |

How can I find out if my bike had the sidestand recall completed? |

BMWdavid, Maybe I'm just being paranoid here. But,there might be a paper chase issue with doing the recall work yourself. That recall letter we all received had a portion for the service department to fill out confirming the work was done so H-D's HQ has it on record. Maybe that's something you can send in yourself. I don't know. The issue arises when you go to sell the bike, trade it in, or bring it in for other service. The last part may cause the most rectal discomfort. A dealer might not release your bike until a safety recall has proof of being addressed. |

Take the bike to the dealer and ask them if it's been done. Too easy. If it hasn't it's a no cost recall if it hass you don't need to worry any more. |

Mounting the bike from the right side...hmmm, perhaps but since my right hip is going out I'm not trying that move! In any case I'm 6' but there is no way this guy is going to get his leg over the seat of a Uly while standing on the ground! So its up on the left peg and up and over. Andy at Appleton is checking on the '08 stand for me. I have the recall letter and figure when I do get up to my dealer I can have them verify that the new stand is on and release the recall. Still need to get the BAS recall done but I'm not as worried about that one at the moment. David |

David, Sorry to hear about your right hip. It is my left hip that keeps me from swinging my leg over my Uly from the ground but I can mount from either side. I chose the right side to reduce the sidestand loading. Another thought to reduce the strain on the sidestand when mounting from the left. Weld a spacer plate, maybe 1/2-1" thick, to the bottom of the sidestand so that the bike is more upright. The closer the bike is to vertical when loading the footpeg, the less stress on the sidestand assembly. You could experiment with different thicknesses under the sidestand before welding. |

Is the 2008 stand different from 2007? |

Gotj, Neat idea about the spacer. What I do now is put a piece of wood about 3/4"-1" thick on the floor of my garage. Then park bike with stand on the wood. Keeps bike much more vertical. |

BMWDavid, The original 06 sidestand on my bike had washers on the two bolts that attached the mounting plate to the engine. The recall kit did not have any washers but it appeared the threads were deeper on the bolts. I think one of the problems with the stock stand was that the bolts would bottom out in the holes and not apply the correct torque on the mounting plate. There were failures with the two mounting bolts breaking and the pivot bolt backing out or breaking. I recall that they were also concerned about the weld at the top of the stand as well. I would recommend getting it replaced. I was always afraid that someone would park their bike to the left of mine and my bike's sidestand would fail and damage their bike. |

Davo, You know I don't think my mount has the washers. I gotta check that. I have made sure the two bolts are nice and snug as well as the pivot bolt. It all looks fine and feels tightly secured but I know it still can break. As soon as I can score a stand from the '08 parts book that puppy is going on the bike. Meanwhile the bike is parked with out anything next to it so if it should go down...no damage to anything but the Uly. Bertotti-Yeah the hip thing is a drag sometimes. Its actually better now than when it went out. Something about losing 35 pounds has a little to do with that! David |

here's what "it's" supposed to look like. Thanks to Ihavemanyfleas. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/251469.jpg There were 2 problems with the Uly stand. 1. The pivot bolt loosened by itself. 2. The bracket bolts did not clamp sufficiently. The bolts (at least on my bike) were not bottoming out, but there was excessive thread friction. Either condition prevents adequate clamping of the two parts. I suspected it was due to out of date dry thread lock put on by the bolt manufacturer. (see this on cars, it's a problem that comes and goes.) The pivot bolt needs no explanation. |
