Okay so after a spirited weekend my speedo on my 02 x1 stopped working. Its lit up and the mileage shows. Just dont show speed. Any suggestions? | ||

Speedo sensor? The new part is 74431-01 and has a grey connector. Is the connector on your current one black? I think the new ones go for around $55. | ||

Probably the speedo sensor...Same thing happened to my 02 Cyclone...I picked mine up from Al at American Sport Bike. Its a real simple fix. One screw on mine and a harness connection and that was it. | ||

A 10 minute fix after you have the part...a pain but easy enough.. | ||

Why does the Buell eat speed sensors so much? It is the same sensor as on a Sportster, isn't it? I never had one fail on my Sportsters but just had the third one fail on my S3T. "The new part is 74431-01 and has a grey connector." Zenfrogmaster would that part number apply for a 1999 model also? Thanks | ||

It's the same part for all years (tubers, at least - I don't know about the newer bikes). I mention the color because a dealer might have the old part (74402-95) on the shelf, and that part doesn't have the updates and will eventually fail, too. | ||

Most folks don't actually *ride* their Sportsters, LOL. We have a tendency to put miles on our Buells, and they can get wet when we ride - at least mine does, my last name should be Murphy - hence the new connector update. | ||

Why does the Buell eat speed sensors so much? My theroy and seems to standup. The wire for the speedo senors continues up thru the wire loom up to the connectors to the speedo on the left side of the frame. The loom is also close to a high voltage source, the rear spark plugwire. Plug wires have a tendancy to "leak" voltage when they get worn. With the close proximity of the routing of the rear wire so close to the loom the "leaking" voltage "zaps" the low voltage sensor causing a failure. Anyone who had this happen, way before the newer updated sensor, I would tell them to get either new plug wires or re-route there rear wire and they never had a problem since. I am still on my second "old style" sensor and it has been on there for over 50k plus miles.... | ||

I had luck a couple times by just wiping it off on my X1. It's no good now though.Went bad about two months ago.It comes out fairly easily too.the worse part is removing the battery to access the plug.I got to go get a new one too | ||

Had the speedo on my '01 X-1 go wonky on the ride to Laguna. Needle started bouncing, then finally died. Next day, it started working again, and was intermittent all day. After a stop, it would work for 5 mins, or 20 miles, ect. Day after that, it came to life again and has worked fine ever since. When I changed transmission fluid, the magnet on the drain plug was very fuzzy. A piece of grunge got onto the end of the sensor, then washed away??? | ||

Just got some info on speedo sensors on tubers from Maz at UKBEG they are a pain in the arse. Voltage regs are notoriously flakey on these bikes and it only takes a momentary spike to fry the speed sensor. The ignition module has a regulated 5v feed to the cam position sensor-red wire/white trace. The speed sensor should be re-wired using this 5v feed instead of the normal ignition 12v supply. |
