Ok, so this is my first real post on this site and I've got a question/thought that may not have an easy answer/solution without actually trying it. I've had the opportunity to measure the triple clamp fork tube diameters from an '07 and '08 Uly and found they are the same! Wondering if it would make sense to just buy the '08 triple clamps to get the extra 20 deg steering lock??(and use the same fork assemblies). I realize that the front axle on the '08 is offset to the rear to maintain the same steering geometry of the '06/'07. Using '08 triple clamps only on an '07 would extend the wheelbase and offset the front axle forward to slow down steering response. I don't see this as necessarily being a bad thing for a bike that spends a lot of time on the freeway and no time in the dirt. Any opinions from anyone on this? (anybody from Buell who tried this?) thanks. (Message edited by prowler on August 22, 2007) |

Prowler, The fork tube diameters have also changed. Not sure if the 06/07 fork tubes would fit in the 08 triple clamps? |

I saw that the tube dimiter did change so they would not fit also you would have to change both upper and lower |

If that works then changing over can't be too expensive. What's a set of 08' triple clamps cost? Heck, if the price isn't too far out of line I'd be tempted to go that route. |

Can we get someone to verify that the I.D. of the 08' triple clamp is same as the 06/07 top tube O.D. ??? Are the 06 and 07 the same? |

According to Buell's website, the fork diameter on the 08's is 47 mm compared to 43 mm on the 06's and 07's. |

I would just like to know the p/n's and prices for the 08 triples and forks. |

I measured the outside diameter of the upper fork tubes (where they go into the upper and lower triple trees) and they ARE the same diameter for '07 and '08. Yes, the lower sliders are larger for '08, but the OD of the upper tubes where the triple clamps are located are the same OD. The '06/'07's are necked down a lot between the clamps and the '08's aren't. So the trees will fit the tubes, but how will handling be affected? That's the question? |

I'm sure the quickness of the handling would be affected, to what degree?, we shall have to wait and see. But here's the thing, a guy with a 06/07 could change out the triple clamps only and if the handling bothered him that much then he could go the next step and purchase the rest at his leisure. Maybe a track guy would be inclined to let the difference bother him but for others maybe it would be not enough difference to matter. |

You can get the whole front end (clamps, forks and fender) for around $1000 retail. Forks:J0121.3AK & J0122.3AK Triples:J0105.3AKYBD & J0106.3AKYBD Lower Center Fender:M1125.3AKMBP Just changing the clamps will lose you some trail. Not sure I'd want to experiment with that. Up to you. |

Does it really bother you all that much? The only time I notice it is when I am parking |

this may be a stupid question, but can the original triple trees be altered by say a machinist? pro? to get the 20 degrees cheaper than 1000 dollars. |

You can't machine the current trees to get 20 degrees extra. You may be able to shave some off the bump stop and do a little filing on the top tree, but the forks will hit the frame. |
