Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere on the site, but I was reading the IronButt webpage to see how things were shaping up for tomorrows start of the 2007 rally. Noticed that there is one Ulysses entered for Buell (their only entry). For those of you not familiar with the IronButt rally, it is a long distance rally held every two years that takes the riders to many different locations across the US. Riders earn bonus points for visiting certain locations in addition to their final destinations. Its basically an 11 day 11,000 mile marathon. There is a short writeup there which describes the tech inspection each bike must pass to be certified to participate. Bikes are limited in how much fuel they can carry as well as how load the exhaust can be. Apparently the Buell entry set a new record for the noisiest motorcycle ever tested during Iron Butt Rally tech inspection. The aftermarket exhaust system on the Uly was measured at 113 decibels on the official test. The standard is 105. It was more than double the perceived loudness of any other motorcycle in the Rally. Obviously, they made him install the stock exhaust prior to giving him a passing grade. Should be interesting to see how the Uly fairs in this type of event. I know there are several folks on this board who have done IronButt rides on their Uly's, but none quite this extreme. |

I wonder what exhaust was on the Uly when it measured 113. |

That would be Bison. He owns the "unofficial" record from Deadhorse to Ushuhia on a BMW GS ADV. (21 Days) This is going to be interesting. |

Best wishes to him...it would be quite the coup for a Uly finish first. |

Here's a link for those interested. It's a daily write up of the going's on. www.ironbuttrally.com/IBR/2007.cfm I have rode with several of these riders on different LD events. Definitely the hard core of the hard core. |

One Uly, dozens of BMWs. Lots of FJRs and STs as well. And a Sportster. Well, the BMWs sure seem to be the mount of choice. I was lurking on a BMW forum today though, and there were just as many posts about issues with the Beemers as any other bike out there. But I just can't believe all those LD riders don't know something. Dan |

A rider successfully finished the IBR (I believe it was 2 rallies ago) on a 2002 Buell S3T. |

All bikes have issues. The more they are ridden, the greater the chances for issues. I guess how they are dealt with is the important thing. The rally was run by a guy on a 250, and he he finished higher than a lot of traditional touring bikes. It aint the bow, its the indian. |

"A rider successfully finished the IBR (I believe it was 2 rallies ago) on a 2002 Buell S3T." Yes, that was Jim Hickerson, a neighbor of mine. About the only problem he had was the battery, as I recall. Don't know if he's doing any LD riding anymore. |

Found a pic of the bike over at advrider: Caption from advrider: "That's Dick Fish on the Buell and Rob Nye on the RTP arriving first at the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to bag the first bonus. Speculation is that Fish will be one of only a few that attempt to go all the way to Labrador in Canada for the BIG bonus on Leg 1." And believe it or not, this Buell has already set an all-time IBR record: From the official IBR page (http://www.ironbuttrally.com/IBR/2007.cfm): There were no close calls with the noise testing. Everyone passed with flying colors except for Dick Fish. Dick failed with flying colors, setting a new record for the noisiest motorcycle ever tested during Iron Butt Rally tech inspection. The aftermarket exhaust system on his Buell Ulysses was enough to wake the dead blasting out 113 decibels on the official test. The standard is 105. Because the decibel scale is non-linear, 113 is not just 8% louder than the standard. It was more than double the perceived loudness of any other motorcycle in the Rally. Although he grumbled about the results, failing the noise test was obviously not a surprise to Mr. Fish. Why else would he have brought his stock exhaust system with him? It was sweaty work for Dick in the parking lot, but the bike will be making much less of a racket when it leaves the starting line on Monday morning. Woohoo! Go Buell! |

You can fail with a loud exhaust?! I thought they were only checking for fuel tank size and stuff like that. |

Doesn't look like any auxiliary lights either. That's got to be tough for the all night rides. Look at the beemer. It looks like he has three extra sets of lights. A set near the bottom, small Pia's near the reflectors and big spot lights on top. Different strokes for different folks. |

Is Dick Fish the same guy who owns the XBRR that Walt Sipp raced in the Daytona 200? |

Lorazepam, I think I know the guy you mention that ran the IBR on a 250. Was it a Ninja 250, and I guy named Doug from Toledo, Ohio area? If so, I bought my '99 Ducati ST2 from him. The kicker is that he owned the Ducati when he ran the IBR on the 250, but wouldn't ride it. Thought the 250 would make up for power with fuel economy. I thought he blew it up before the finish, but maybe I am wrong, or he got it fixed(?). Anyway, I am glad he never got along with the Ducati, because I loved that bike, and only parted with it to pay for my Uly. Being 6'4", the Uly is way more comfortable, except for the heat issues on leg and seat. |

The ULY is Dick Fish.....the same guy who owns the XBRR that Walt Sipp raced in the Daytona 200? Better Picture Here http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff161/woodkutter/IBR_Start/IBR-Day01-Sm05.jpg?t=1187828318 For the farklers's I believe: >Parabellum Windshield >Happy Trails Panniers >The Aux Tank is mounted on a Happy Trails Tailplate. It looks definitely a gravity feed but I don't know if it as a single (4 gallons) or a dual dump. (twin 3.75's) >Linda Tanner Custom tankbag around the Aux Tank > Buell Deluxe tank bag I have also seen a long range picture from across the lot and spied the tank bag. Leon Begeman finished 12th in 2003 on a 250 ninja. I have a few friends in this years rally. I hope Rebecca Vaughn does well, she is an outstanding rider, and has worked hard for this one. |

My pal Martin got 2nd his first try then completed the event on a 67cc Zundapp the next time. He mailed 10 pistons and cylinders around the country and would rebuild the bike while others were sleeping. Insane event. |

Sorry off topic but I loved Augie doggie and doggie daddy. Screen name just reminded me of good times. Fuel cell looks to have a feed and a return line. Serious stuff. |

Day 3 and Dick's still running. They had a "phone in" bonus today; this from the Iron Butt Rally site: "Dick Fish called in from the side of a wheat field in New Brunswick after scoring Perce Rock. He's headed for a rest bonus. " |
