Thanks for the tip Mick, bought a polish from the coating guys they say is specially formulated by them for the ceramic finish, blah, blah, blah... I'll be sure to be careful, probably try it on the back of the pipe first. Used to have a friend that lived in Adelaide, I think he's moved to Perth now. Some day I may make it to that side of the world. |

Paul Rogers is in Adelaide. That is where all our bikes came in when we went to Lake Gairdner last year. Loved the city and surrounding countryside.--Course they all drove on the wrong side!! |

awesome, a word of advice is dont tip your bike over in a gravel driveway, my awesome force pipe now looks like somebody rubbed brown rusty paint on two portions of my pipe. im thinking im gonna have to wrap them to get a clean look again |

Can you feel any difference in less heat on your right leg? Especially since you don't have the heat shield anymore. Might have to sit in traffic to feel the difference... |

Not as pretty but offers much better heat control. www.swaintech.com I'll probably send in my force this winter. I used it on my diesel turbo manifold (ie HOT) and after three years it is still new looking. |

http://www.swaintech.com/store.asp?pid=10969 1) White Lightning™ really is ceramic so the material is a superior insulating material. 2) White Lightning is applied much thicker than any of the cosmetic coatings. White Lightning™ is applied about .015” thick compared to about .002” thick for the cosmetic coatings. Because White Lightning™ is the best insulating material and it is applied thicker than any other coating, White Lightning™ offers performance improvements that cannot be matched. Because White Lightning™ really is a ceramic, it is not possible to offer color choices like you can get with paint based coatings. However, the white textured finish of White Lightning™ makes it an ideal base for a good high temperature paint if you want to change the color of the coating. The high temperature paints bond well to the natural textured finish of White Lightning and the paint will not impact the effectiveness or durability of the White Lightning™ coating. How durable is the coating? It is so durable that you would need to grind it off to remove it and it would take a significant amount of time to grind the coating off in one small area. If you mar the coating with wrenches you tighten up the header to the motor or against the frame rails when you guide the motor into place you will not damage the coating. You can make that area that was marred shiny, but it will not damage the coating or degrade its insulating value. My winter project will be swaintech for the force exhaust, and the BBE Heat Emitting Coating for xb rockerbox covers. I'd like to BBE the heads and cylinders but that would require too much labor. The coat the pistion dome, skirt, valves and valve springs. But thats more time, effort and $$$ than I want to put into a bike that I don't really ride that much/far. I used swaintech low friction coating on my VW car 5th gear and the exhaust coating on the diesel turbo manifold. |

Very nice look. Believe it or not my stock headers look just about as good. Thanks to hours of hand polishing. As you polish them they return to the silver color of stainless, once they heat up they change to a VERY reflective gold. I touch them up about every 1000 miles or so, almost looks as though they are gold plated. I tried to load a pic, but to no avail. Ryker, the whole time I read your post I thought you were referring to the blue coating on the X1W - lol. The link set me straight. |

Mine don't go dull, no hours of polishing, no excess heat. just clean up when ever i wash the buell. can clean them with an sos pad to remove road debris. I personally don't care for the gold look which is why I had mine coated |

The hours of polishing is only required initially. It took maybe 4 hours total. After that maybe 15 minutes a week, just a quick wipe. I didn't like the dull gold look either, but glossy it looks pretty sharp. Out of pocket expense - 10.00$. I know those coatings aren't cheap, plus I had no down time. |

I love the gold look, that's why I haven't done my headers yet. I just found a place over near Stanford that will just coat the insides only. I'm planning on that, this winter. |

What is a "ceramic coating",sort of like a pottery glaze?can you do it to other parts to?How durable is it? Pottery is ceramic, but not all ceramics are like pottery. Ceramic can be made to do magical things. I've got my muffler ceramic coated. We hit it with a hammer to get it on the bike. No chips. The nice things about ceramic coating exhaust parts are that the ceramic is a good thermal insulator, so it keeps things cooler, and it is chemically no-reactive, so it will not corrode. It is also fairly slick, so it is easy to clean. Here is info from a coating company: http://www.hpcoatings.com/am/products/products_ove rview.aspx |

Oh, you asked if you could do other parts. Yes, there are coatings designed for many different things (I'm not sure all of them are technically ceramic.) You can coat the face of your piston to keep it from absorbing heat. You can use a different coating on the skirt of the piston to reduce friction between it and the cylinder wall. There is another coating which attracts oil which you can apply to your cams, lifters, and springs to keep them lubricated. There is yet another coating which repells oil, which you can use on things like the inside of an oil pan to help it shead oil. I'm thinking about having my rear axle coated so it won't corrode. |

I had the 5th gear in my car replaced to give me lower highway RPMS. Before sticking it in I sent it off for low - friction coating. Too squezze out a bit more MPG. Not that 47mpg is a low number to begin with. next engine I build it will be coated from top to bottom.... |
