http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/278325.html?1179892846 Here is the link to my thread I started on the XB board. Thought it may be more appropriate in here. Anybody have some ideas. My dealer and I cannot figure it out. Thanks! |

Turns out the clanking sound was the crank bearing failing which was causing piston slap and scored cylinders. Time for a total teardown and rebuild... (Message edited by dtx on August 13, 2007) |

How was the diagnosis finally made? Sounds like you had to open up one or both cylinders. Was it the right side or left side crank bearing, not that it matters which side it was at this point. You probably won't know how extensive the repairs will be until it gets taken apart. Hopefully the cases are good and will need just a cylinder hone or clean-up bore. Please keep us posted on the progress if you can. |

Yup, Cycle Connection has her now and did the tear down / diagnostics. They said it was the crank bearing for the rear cylinder. They are indicating new crank, pistons and cylinders due to the damage. The rough estimate I got was $2,400.00. At this point I am trying to decide if I should do some performance upgrades or buy all stock parts again. I don't want it to happen again. |

Copied from another post in the Racing Forum that I wrote... What kind of longevity are you guys getting out of your track motors? I have had my 04 12R to 3 trackdays and the crank bearing has failed (among other things). Yup, that means total motor tear down and rebuild! Bike only has 13K on it and prior use was just street riding. Once I get this all fixed I may be a bit reluctant to put it back on the track and push it that hard. As it turns out when the crank bearing failed it caused the piston to start slapping which in turn scored the cylinders up pretty good (so my dealer says). I love taking my bike to the track and dicing it up with my friends, but if this is the risk I am taking (financially) to have fun then I will have to seriously think about whether using this bike/motor on the track is a good idea. Oh, the oil pump gear drive was badly worn too. For my rebuild, I am probably gonna need a new crank (or lightened one), new pistons and new cylinders. On the bright side, this could be a good opportunity to build up a little monster. My dealer is already indicating that this would be the time to upgrade the performance of the motor. Frankly, I am looking for longevity. |

Brian, I have been running the good stuff. Mobil 1 20W 50 with a K&N oil filter. |
