Sept 2007 MCN just arrived!
Nice two page article touting the virtues of the "greatly improved 2008 Uly"

The best thing they claimed is the new steering lock.

Y'know what part I liked best?
"... we scored the Buell's handling, braking and general pavement manners superior to the
BMW (R1200GS) a travesty of biblical proportions in some camps. But it just as clearly failed to match the GS in off-road use."

There probably is a great debate about the GS versus everything else. I read the HU blogs http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/tstories/ and you read about a lot of GS riders but most don't do a lot of serious dirt.

This guy http://enlazandoamerica.com.ar/ing/rtecnicoing.htm rode from Maryland to Argentina on a Uly.

I'd say the jury is still out but the emotional debate will rage a loooonggg time.

I'm glad that Glynn Kerr (H-D's Missed Opportunity, same issue) didn't do the impression on the Uly.

I think Mr Kerrs "missed opportunity" was not writing political rants.
He say's it's been 13 years since his first lunch with Willie G, I wonder it that was his last one?

Funny, I have taken Two BMW GS1100's in on trade on the ULY. For both of them it was the dealer support and network, esp in far flung corners of remote travelling . And the cost of the services versus the BMW's. Both loyal Beemer riders, neither could be happier than on their new ULY's ;)

When I see the comparison between the Beemers and the Uly, I have to wonder if I live in a different universe. They seem like totally different bikes, not even in the same class.

Before I test rode the Uly I thought that I wanted a BMW GS. When I actually rode the GS it seemed like a really huge lumbering beast. Just for history I rode an R75 for years and then a K100.

It really seemed too heavy and awkward for any off road adventuring. I realize that the F 650 GS is considered a much less capable machine, but it seemed much better suited for adventure touring than the big GS.

Then I rode the Uly and it was everything that I liked about the F 650. Plus it made the BMW F bike seem really flimsy.

Granted, there are many different riding styles and preferences, but for me it was love at first ride on the Uly. It's light and nimble like the F 650, but sturdy like the big GS. Yet somehow so different from either that it doesn't seem to fit into the same class of bikes.

I have an 02, 1150 GS right now. It's for sale for many of the above mentioned reasons.

There is nothing wrong with the bike. It's just boring. I want/need a new toy with some fun built in. The sturdy BMW tractor has run it's course and I'm ready for an adventure style bike with some hooligan built in.

I'm in the market for a 2008 Uly. I like the fact that I can get parts for the thing anywhere. I think Harley/Buell has more dealersips in CA than BMW has the whole USA. Besides $18400 OTD for a new GS is just out of line. The base price on any BMW I would want is $14K+.

Hope to join the Buell ranks soon.... RON

I just got home from a 100 mile early morning jaunt with my two R1200GS buddies..Too hot for much more fun today....Both of my buddies love their GS's...some guys like Fat Chicks too. The BMW GS's are the weirdest handling bikes I have every rode, I feel like I am driving a Mercury Crown Victoria.... The BMW is like limburger cheese...an acquired taste.... just not mine.

A year or so after buying my '06 Uly I figured I owed it to myself to test ride an R12GS. Once I got going I could not believe how much of the GS there was in front of me...and in back of me...what a beast!

The suspension was stiff (presumably an adjustment; I'm 150 lb), the seat was hard (the salesman had fitted the low seat), it was noisy (had a blooey pipe on it)...when I got back on my Uly to ride home it felt SO MUCH BETTER...

I've been in some mild (and a couple not-so-mild) off-pavement conditions, and the Uly has hung right in there with the GS's. But it's a free country and I'm glad of it. Buy what you like and like what you buy. I did and I do.

>>The BMW is like limburger cheese.<<

Genius.

But wouldn't it be Emmentaler?

Emmentaler would be Swiss. Emmentaler is closer to Rotax than Limburger I think.

Thanx for the welcome guys.

Sat I head to Auburn, Ca to test ride a Uly and possibly an XB12Ss. The Uly seating position appeals to me more than the extra bit of "hooligan" the XB has. I want to ride both before deciding though.

Saw a funny sig line the other day.... BMW Motorrad, making mechanics out of riders since 1923..

Would I be out of line if I said that the largest advantage (that I see) that BMW has over the Uly is the fact that they can get nobbier tires?

Since I've never ridden my GS in the dirt and don't intend to take the Uly there it's a moot point for me. It could be a very valid point though, for those who wish to venture far from the beaten path.

I rode a GS with knobbies in the dirt once and it reminded me of the old joke about were does a 600lb Gorilla sit? The same place a 600lb dirtbike goes when it gets outta shape. ANYWHERE IT WANTS....

10-4 on that...these bikes are too heavy for much off road work...no matter what those fools do on www.Advrider ...like stuck up to their handlebars in mud holes on 1200cc bikes... I can hear it now...."How close is the nearest wrecker, Bubba?"

right! I've been decrying how ugly the Stroms are for having all that crap on the front. And then at the BMWMOA national rally this year I could not help but notice that the (post airhead) GS has an absurdly large amount of crap up front also.

The scary thing is that I never noticed that kind of thing until I got the Uly and realized the beauty of nice simple clean and naked.
