Kazuo Osada, a salaried worker, was unaware of the loss of his leg...

I found it odd they referred to him as a salaried worker.

"Phantom pains"

I can attest to phantom pains existing. My left leg has been paralyzed for almost 5 years now and I can still feel
pains in the leg that I have 0 sensation in. I have also felt itchiness from time to time even though the sciatic nerve
is long since transected.

On the good side though they said after 1 year I would not be getting any sensation back...ever. Recently I've had
some pains of a different character, stabbing rather than crushing, and following these bouts of pain I have regained
sensation in some of my skin down my shin, and in my instep. It's not much, but it reminds me why they call what a
Doctor does for a living a medical practice.
They know less than they think about how the human body works
and what the limits of endurance and healing are. They told me I'd never walk again, and to "just get used to it".

You bet it is! when I first noticed it I started freaking out, I couldn't form words, just noises!

My wife and kids thought I'd hurt myself or something. It wasn't until I'd settled down a bit that I could tell them what
was going on. At least the next time the pains started I wasn't upset about it. I say BRING IT ON!!!

The stabbing pains are apparently caused by the nerves re-connecting inside the myelin sheath.

My doctor has repeatedly used the word miracle, and brought in a boat load of interns when I had my most recent nerve conduction
survey (they stick long needles into your leg with electrodes attached so that they can map out the nerve activity in the area). My
previous survey showed absolutely zero activity below the knee, the same result I've had since the accident. The latest one shows
that there is some nerve regeneration down through my shin and instep. It is supposed to be imposible outside of a one year or so
window. They said that if it hadn't grown in by then it never would.

I attribute a lot of the recovery I've been making to my attitude. I refuse to give up.

Too many people are ready to take the easy way out and just quit if the doctors say it's ok to. Like I've said before, I have three kids
and if I quit just because things get hard what kind of credibility do I have when I tell them to keep going? I have to keep pushing
myself to my limits.

BTW I'm one step closer to my brass ring, I'm now enrolled in the University of Missouri mechanical engineering program (although
the specifics of what my exact emphasis will be is still up in the air). So I'm one step closer to knocking on the door in East Troy!

I know this well, except for me it's the cubital tunnel, my ulnar nerve is pretty bad off.
(they stick long needles into your leg with electrodes attached so that they can map out the nerve activity in the area)
I had no idea we've been through some of the same things. Makes sense though, a nerve study is a nerve study.
The electrodes go in my shoulder and the "pick ups" are attached to the fingers.
They said that if it hadn't grown in by then it never would.
They gave Pete two years I think, and he's doing some pretty remarkable stuff.
I attribute a lot of the recovery I've been making to my attitude.
That my man, is why you made hero status.
So I'm one step closer to knocking on the door in East Troy!
Go Brian Go!!!

I'm sure I heard something, not long ago, about nerve regeneration by electrical stimulation. It was one of those fill-in reports you get on the news programmes, but I can't for the life of me remember who was doing the research or where.
