A friend of mine gave me a program he got off the Net called EcmSpy. It looks like a full featured Mapping and diagnosis program and seems to be able to reset the TPS Have any of you ever heard of it or used it?? |

I just got done reading all of the info posted on UK BEG about ECM-Spy, and I must say it looks very promising. I have the palm software and am looking into making a cable for it. If you get the right palm (which I have), it should be a three-wire ordeal, transmit, receive, and ground. I have a contact in UK BEG right now who is using a Palm connector, so I'll keep everyone up to date on our correspondence. Right now, it looks like the hardest part is going to be getting the Deutsch connector that is needed to make a nice connection to the ECM. Anyone here have a supplier? the part number needed is "Deutsch Connector: DT06-4S-C015 / Wedge: W4S" |

Looks like it would be a fun winter project... Hmmm... further digging shows that some (all?) of the Palms may already have TTL level outputs... so that would avoid the dongle I posted above. I'll have to do more digging, and dust off some of the Palms sitting in a box down in the basement... |

Batts Racing is very responsive on shipping and stocks quite a bit of Deutsch stuff. I did some work on my FXD last year and got some Deutsch connectors from them. This page has the one you are looking for although not an exact match: http://tinyurl.com/2lc5rn The called for part, "Plug, DT, 4 way, reduced dia. seals DT06-4S-C015 W4S" is in the Deutsch literature. It is probably the same as the more widely used "Plug, DT, 4 way DT06-4S W4S" seen on the link above other than the "reduced diameter seals". If the "reduced diameter seals" are to improve the moisture seal, I think it only means that the holes where the pins enter the orange rubber seal are slightly smaller. So you probably don't really need that for the testing/tuning setup. If you call the guys at Batts, they can probably tell you if you can use the more common one seen there on their site. Or maybe can get the right part for you. Here is a link to the catalog with details on all the connectors. That company is the distributor and does not, as far as I know, want to sell in small lots: http://www.laddinc.com/pdf/Connector%20Selector.pd f Batts Racing will sell in small lots, and you can order additional contacts, seals, etc., in small quantities. I replaced a aged and badly weathered 12 pin Amp connector on my FXD with a Deutsch, and I added two other Deutsch connectors in the course of adding a Dakota digital tach. I was very happy with quality of the connectors and how well the work went. My feeling is that every connector on the bike should be a Deutsch. Here is a source for the Palm connectors for build it yourself cables: http://www.gomadic.com/accessories-developer-parts -connectors-plugs-palm.html Gomadic also sells some bits and pieces for the HP (iPAQ) PDAs and also Garmin and Magellan GPS receivers. And their support pages will give you the pinouts for the connectors. My knowledge on all this comes from messing around with GPS and PDAs in the past. I also had good luck on producing custom cables by buying Hot Synch cables on eBay, cutting the ends off, and fitting connectors from Gomadic, or other sources. With this connector, it should be pretty cheap to make a palm connector. Reep, I made sure my palm had TTL level outputs before I went ahead with this. It does, so all it will take to talk to the ECM is 3 wires (TX, RX, GND). I'm pretty pumped about the possibility of resetting my own TPS without having to pay several hundred for the software/cable. I feel a little bad for Al, as this may negate the need for VDSTS (and Direct Link), but it should present the home tuner with a lot more options. I am going to talk to the developer and see if a future version can have error code checking or something long those lines in it. It is not currently an option offered by the software. That is a good buy on the one on eBay. And it comes with the more expensive solid pins and sockets. The solid (as opposed to stamped) pins and sockets are intended to be crimped on with a hard to find/expensive multiple indent crimping tool but the good news is that they can be easily soldered on instead. That seller has a bunch of Deutsch stuff, including that 12 pin connector I mentioned above. Jack |

Jack, I work for an avionics company, and they use Deutsch connectors for a lot of stuff, so I am sure I can find a set of crimpers to use. If not, you are right, soldering would work just fine. Also, thanks for the link to Gomadic. I was getting ready to buy a cable and chop it apart, but I wasn't very excited about dealing with 22g (or smaller) wires. With the Gomadic end, I can use my own wires and make it look a lot less chopped together. |

Which one? That eBay link has the Deutsch at about as good a price as you'll find and the link to Gomadic has the Palm and iPAQ connectors. Those should be right up your alley and you get to play with your soldering iron too. :>) Jack |

I hope I don't sound like too much of a newb asking this, especially since I was the one that contributed to this conversation but, where is the data connector on a Firebolt? Is it behind the fairing? under the seat? tucked away somewhere? Thanks. On another note, I got my connector from Gomadic yesterday (ordered it on Sat., excellent service) and it looks easy to use and edit. Hopefully it is as easy as it looks. |

Full diagnostics, including running tests against injectors etc. Error messages reading and clearing Cam Position Sensor 0-5 volt reading. Live Sensor Data viewing Datalogging And you can also remap the Fuel tables easily. The user interface has been deliberately restricted to not make ignition tables and rev limits etc too easy due to the risk of damage! If you follow the links re WinOLS, you can learn everything you need to remap the iginition tables and others. ECM Spy will let you change everything, including the Rev Limits if you know where to look! Gunter and the Team in Germany have released software which will just grow and grow as the worldwide community donates knowledge! |

SteveXB, yeah, I figured that out after I posted. I tend to do that though, assume things that aren't really based on reality. I now have both connectors, so I will be putting a cable together very soon. All - I live about 20 miles from J&P Cycles, and could possibly pick up several sets of connectors/sockets if there is enough interest. $7 of shipping is overkill for something that small. In my opinion, the E-bay auction is better than J&P. With the ebay item, you get male and female plugs, plus all of the pins and sockets you need to make your connector, plus make a trouble code reset dongle, for $8.64. With J&P, you only get 1 plug and 5 sockets for $11.97. I would have a hard time getting the 1 plug plus sockets shipped for less than $7, so it makes sense to me to get the extra plug and pins for $1.50. The ebay seller is excellent, I would recommend going that route. No, I don't have any affiliation with him or TMS Racing. |

Wow!!! I just found out yesterday about ECMspy. This software is very powerful especially for free. I had to build the interface but it only took a couple of hours and works great. Already had the MAX232 and as far as the connector I am using the ones that came with my VDSTS. I put the same type db9 male connectors on the ECMspy interface that comes on the VDSTS interface. This seems to be a good way to do it if you have VDSTS already. |

i am having problems getting a cable setup to work. i have a vdsts already as well as a spare Deutsch that i had laying around. any pointers on how to make this work. i already have the keyspan usb to serial adapter and i bought a cable to convert serial to ttl. this is the link to the cable i got. http://piclist.com/techref/io/serial/RCL1.htm . what the heck am i doing wrong. |

Gemini It looks like that cable should work and is inexpensive. Don't forget you need to power that cable with 5 volts on header pin 1. There is 12 volts available on the bikes Deutsh connector pin 4 but would most likely destroy the cable without regulating it to 5v first. Also try getting the cable to work on a computer with a native RS232 port first because as of now you don't know if the problem is in the Keyspan or the ttl level converter. The signal wording on the RLC-1 header connector looks a little misleading. Looking at the description wording makes things a little more clear. This is the way I see it. Please verify on your own before connecting. Also it indicates you must connect the RLC header pin 5 to 6 if not being used? RLC-1 Header ------------- Deutsch Pin 1 5v -<5v Regulator<-- Pin 4 12 volt Pin 2 Ground -------------- Pin 2 Ground Pin 3 <From TTL To 232< Pin 3 Tx Data Out Pin 4 >From 232 To TTL> Pin 1 Rx Data In Pin 5 \Connect To RLC Pin 6 ? hey thanks alot. it is a little risky but i can try using the 5 volts from the tps as long as it doesn't cause too much of a voltage drop from the bike circuit. |

If there is any voltage drop at all from using the sensor 5V supply, then it will stuff up a TPS reset and affect all the sensor readings, and the bike will run very bad while that is connected. My guess is that there will not be any voltage drop, but best to check with a multimeter, I would be interested to see if the 5V sensor supply can handle a bit more load and still stay stable. If it drops more than say 3mV then that is not good. It should be a regulated supply and be very clean, but as you say "a little risky". (Message edited by opto on August 07, 2007) |

You guys that are having troule getting the Deutsch stuff, if the bike is out of warranty just change the plug to something with 4-pins that you can get both ends for. I have the propper connection on my lead but just made a cable for a mates bike and we just rewired the connnector on the bike. The only quick source we found was a heavy plant auto electrician and he want $50 for the plug and 5min with thte crimper. The TTL-232R USB to TTL Serial cables are easy to get and quite cheap. No sense busting your arse getting a working Deutsch plug just for the sake of it. We left the crimped on connector so he can go back to Deutsch if he really needs to. |

There are a few guys on the BuelletinBoard that are making cables and are a bit disappointed in the lack of cable relief on the Deutsch connector. I did a little searching around came across this: http://www.deutschconnector.com/products/deutsch_dt_4-way_connectors.html The DT4S-BT looks like it may fit the bill. If you fill it with RTV it will plug the unused spots in the cable and provide good cable relief. This is excellent! I ordered plugs from the above mentioned suppliers, cut the ends off a USB cable I had laying around, soldered everything up and included extra strain relief everywhere I could. Works Great! It was a total PIA soldering the pins on the PALM connector, but I "got er done". I did find some bad info on this site about the Deutsch pinout on the bike. Correct diagnostic connector pinout on the bike...... Looking into the plug on the bike with the "hump" at the top: ....--.... .4......1. .3......2. ............ Hope this helps somebody. Tank |

You cheated!(hehe) The problem with the Palm program is that it's "non-invasive". That means it can not write to the ECM. I am having problems capturing the full EEPROM from the bike. Either it says "complete" and all the info is not there, or it gets about 1/2 way through and the connection is lost. Whaddup with that?? |

I tried it on a win98 pc and a winXP pc the win98 usb drivers were real finicky and I had the same problem reading the EEProm. No problems encountered with XP. |
