Hey guys, its been a while since I last posted... but my '97 M2 is having some serious exhaust issues. Two days in a row the pipe has come undone from the header while on the highway. Last night I tightened the s**t out of the clamps as rigged up some washers on the front exhaust mount, but to no avail.

Any suggestions or ideas??

Also, how bad is temporarily running an open header?

One option is pulling your studs in favor of allen bolts. While I had this setup on my bike, I didn't have any problems with them coming loose.

If your header is coming loose double nut it! That's what I did and after 20k no problems

i believe they already are allen bolts... I just can't seem to get the exhaust to line up properly... it has already sheered off one of the exhaust port bolts too. This Tuber is beginning to piss me off...

Is the "flange" still attached to the pipe? I have a header that was leaking. It was a flange that seperated from the header pipe. No amount of tightening will fix the problem.

BTW...good idea on the allen head bolts. I may need to try that next time I have the bike in pieces.

Well, I think my bike needs some more background... It is the stock 2" header but I have a custom 2 to 2.5" intermediate pipe that mates to my D&D slip on... The intermediate pipe keeps coming undone from the header and also from the old-style exhaust mount. I'm going to try larger washers and we'll see what happens...

If it's the bottom of the header to front of muffler joint, try new clamps and some Ultra Copper at the joint. Sounds like your clamps are stretched and worn.

What I use on mine at that connection is a clamp I got from NAPA which is 3 in. long and has 3 bolts that clamp it. Still use the sealer for a good seal. Then drill two holes in the clamp(one through each piece of exhaust) put some stainless steel screws through the clamp into the exhaust pipe.It's not going to come apart.....Charlie

you guys are full of good ideas, since I don't have access to power tools I'm gonna try out the 3" auto clamp, we'll see if that has any effect...

but, will running an open header for about 30 miles cause any permanent damage to the bike?

Depends on how you were running it. WFO may cause a lean condition...cruising should have been OK though. Check your plugs just to make sure, but I bet you're fine.

I figure the D&D i have it jetted for is as close to an open header i'm gonna find, so i really hope its ok... i'm gonna wrench on it and let you guys know how everything turns out

turns out my exhaust issues keep compounding. One of the front studs sheered off and one of the rears in compromised pretty bad and both sides are leaking pretty good at the exhaust port. Bad news bears... I took in into the shop to have them re-tapped.
Ugh... I even got stopped by a cop on the way home but he let me go when he saw my exhaust hanging out of my backpack.
