1. The engine uses an internal cartridge as opposed to a spin on oil filter. Was this specified by Buell to Rotax when they designed the engine or did Rotax just stick with what they normally do in this area? 2. The shims used to adjust the valves, are they Rotax/Buell specific or do the ones used for VRODS fit? 3. Spark Plugs, special or standard Buell plugs? 4. It does use standard HD 360 or Syn3 oil? What weight 20W50 like HD, 5W40 like BRP uses for the Spyder, or 15W50 like Aprilia specs for their bikes? 5. Brake/Clutch fluid, DOT 4? 6. Coolant? Not big deals, but it would ease the dealers transition to the new bike and eliminate confusion for customers when buying these "service/maintenance" items if they were standard HD/Buell items. Otherwise a Dealer will have to stock two sets of shims, one for VRODS and one for the new Buell. They will also have to stock two different models of oil filters, spark plugs, brake fluid and coolant. Thanks for the replies. (Message edited by josé_quiñones on July 17, 2007) |

here are some answers to your questions. i was at the buell tech forum at the dealer show and all these questions were answered. 1. shims are the same as on the v-rods (thank the buellie god's for that one cuz i still have a million of them lil shims left over from '02 when H-D sampled them) 2. the plugs are from NGK. some sort of special design. 3. buell requires the use of syn3 oil. 4. dot 4 fluid 5. i'm not 100% on this one but i think it's the same pre-mix that the v-rods use. |

Unbuellievable is correct on his statements, and is correct on the coolant as well; it's the same as V-Rod. The filter is the internal type rather than a spin-on because it is more compact and modern looking, and works well with this type of oiling system. |

On xb I 've ever use screamin eagle synt oil , But I know that using other oils the engine goes better (for example bardhal syn 10W60, or red line 20W50 or motul or other ) the big difference you can find on summer when outside temp is over 30C° . on bike with better oil the first indicator is lower timing of working of the fan and oil consuption is less. we are very limited in oil use by warranty , there will be a list of oil alloved to be used that keep warranty on the bike ? |

Thanks for the replies. Very smart in using existing the existing dealer stock of Vrod shims and coolant for this engine. But there is one question left unanswered: Does it use the same filter that current Rotax engines use: or does it use the internal filter that HD sells (and linked to above) or a third, Buell specific cartridge? José, I found this statement to be of particular interest. Erik Buell: Well this is really a Buell engine not a Rotax, it was built for us by Rotax but this is completely our own engine built to our specification, it’s a clean design, not something that existed at all. Other than maybe the oil filter or something like that, this is totally new, it’s not used anywhere else. G. |

So is the stator, the slipper clutch, looks like the starter motor too. The more you look the more you find in common between the 990 and the 1125. |

And don't forget the typical Rotax hardware, but those things hardly change this from being a Buell engine, built by Rotax. --Sean |

I expect it was deemed unnecessary to "reinvent the wheel" in some parts of the new design. Common sense. No? |
