I've just noticed that my Long has started some predetonation under really hard acceleration. I've never noticed this in the past. I have a few suspects, but I was wondering if anyone else could chime in with their own experience? 1.) Timing, of course, could be the problem... however, does timing shift over time and need adjustment? 2.) TPS. I'm due for a reset, I believe. It's begun to sputter here and there at steady throttle, another problem I haven't had in quite some time. Any other possible culprits? And yes, I'm running Premium gas like I'm supposed to. Thanks a bunch! ~SM |

How is the oil level? The one time I have had my 07 ping was at deal's gap. I was flogging it hard and it started to ping on the second day. I guess it was getting a little hot. It was a half quart low. It did not ping any more after I put oil in it, and no problems since. |

oil / fuel was my problem. i had to bite the bullet an buy gas off base ($9 a gal) and switched to a slightly heavier oil. no more pinging... |

i have xb12r and it does the same thing. it does it more in the hot weather then any. don't know why, i just try to baby it and get the rpm's up. and it goes away. seems like fuel injection noise. like in a car. |

Bad gas is it. Buy so gas at a station with more than one filler hose per pump. I have run into it as well. Give it a tank or two to straighten out. By the way, what sort of octane are you putting into the tank. |

"Bad gas is it. Buy so gas at a station with more than one filler hose per pump. I have run into it as well. Give it a tank or two to straighten out." That may actually do the trick. I know the last station I stopped at had the single nozzle, so I probably got some diluted Premium, and the previous station might have had a single nozzle as well (can't remember). Also, though I'm using Premium, both times have been at little no-name stations that don't label their fuel brand, so probably lower-grade stuff. Though I've stopped there plenty of times before and never had a problem, it's been extraordinarily hot lately (mid-hi 90's, minimum 65% humidity). All these factors may be working together, and against me. Need to go check my oil level again as well... haven't done that for several rides now (need to switch to synthetic soon, also). Thanks for the feedback! ~SM (Message edited by Swordsman on August 08, 2007) |

does any one know just how much dilution is allowed with a single nozzle gas pump? like if the person before me fills with regular than I fill with premium how many gallons of regular get into my tank. I know putting 1 gallon of regular into my tank I notice it because the bike pings even on short trips. |

The last time mine pinged I was traveling and could had to use the single nozzle pump. You get a couple of cups of 85 octane gas with your 92 octane. I had 3 or 4 tanks that way. The air temp was in the high 90's also. Got home went to my favorite gas station and a couple of tanks later Back to normal. |

I use the harley fuel treatment. It seems to make a difference in how well my bike runs. |

Mine would ping in hot days especially in stop and go traffic. I started using horse power in a bottle fuel treatment/octane sold at Harley. Only one oz/tank and no more ping since. A $6 dollar bottle lasts 12 tanks |

UPDATE: Oil WAS low. Changed it, and switched off to synthetic (FINALLY!) Added some octane booster, and topped it off with real brand name premium from a 3-nozzle pump. Pinging has ceased! Thanks a bunch for the help! ~SM |
