Anything other than the Buell Race can fit the Buell Race header? Like an aftermarket, anything? Borla, Wileyco, Vance & Hines, etc.? |

Jay... I think D&D used to market a muffler specifically for the race header. Never actually seen one, though. I modded my old V&H to work with the race header. I didn't really like the Pro Series stainless steel race muffler... it was really heavy, more than twice as heavy as the old V&H I was using on the stock header. |

Hey... I found it on Sporttwin.com I think it's against board rules to post a link to non-sponsor... here'a a pic though.
Looks pretty cool, but it's not the same finish as the race header and I bet it's LOUD. |

Hmm... it looks like it could slip off the front and still be attached at the rear with that strap set-up. Be wary. There is no way my V&H could slip off the front and still remained fixed at the rear. It looks like it's possible with the D&D unless that rear strap is fastened somehow to the muffler body... maybe it is and I just can't see it. Did I mention to be wary? |

I still have my old aluminum Vance & Hines, did you just cut off inflow elbow, or did you have to modify the body too? I'll have to take a look at mine. I read in another thread the race header is the best setup for torque, but the can is lacking as you mention. So I've been eyeing them as they come up on ebay, like now. But wouldn't know what to do for a muffler, don't like the idea of adapting one from a car, as some have. I wonder if I could get somebody to just cut the stock muffler in the middle and just cut out the 4 or 5 inches from the middle and weld it back together. Actually what I would like is for KDFab, or ARC, to make me a copy of the stock muffler, in titanium, just a few inches shorter. But KD is so backed up with orders I don't know if they would even bother right now. |

The D&D strap on the back is pretty healthy. It's got 2 cap screws with lock nuts. You got to make sure they're tight. I had mine walk back on me about 3/8 of an inch. I adjusted the strap so I was all the way back on the "Z" bracket and the can was all the way on the header and tightened up the strap. It hasn't moved at all since then. Mind you, this is on a non race header with the D&D mid pipe being used. |

That's a hellacious clamp. "I still have my old aluminum Vance & Hines, did you just cut off inflow elbow, or did you have to modify the body too?" I cut the elbow off right at the end of the front mount and got the stub expanded at a muffler shop (for free). I cut 2 1/8 inches out of the aluminum body and drilled new rivet holes in the front. I had to trim the perforated core the same amount and reweld it back to the endcap (it was easy).
I still use the old front hanger, not the Y-mount. I've never had a problem with it. I used the original clamps from my stock muffler... glad I kept them.
The rear hanger needed to have the rear mounting points moved inward about 1/2" for everything to line up. It fits good for something cobbled up. It doesn't sound as deep as the SS race can, and it's louder now than it used to be because of the decreased internal volume (it's too loud). I don't think it barks like a D&D, though.
"I wonder if I could get somebody to just cut the stock muffler in the middle and just cut out the 4 or 5 inches from the middle and weld it back together." That's something that never crossed my mind. I still have my old stock muffler, it might be fun to try something with it. It would take an expert to do correctly, I'm pretty sure. |

My problem is I want quiet, yet light-weight. My understanding is, that it's the race header that adds torque, not the muffler. And further that the stock muffler is not that restrictive, but mainly heavy (not to mention ugly) and won't fit the race header. I guess I will give ARC Fabrication a call, since KD is so busy. |

I use a Supertrapp 2.5" universal (ala the early Buell race setups). I just use a universal muffler hanger and a U-bolt clamp on the back. |

Hey, now, here's an interesting one: http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?hl=en&sl=de&u=ht tp://www.speed-of-color.de/index.php%3Fcat%3DAUSPU FFSMX%26product%3DAU-009&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dspeed% 2Bcolor%2Bhsa%2Bpro%2Brace%26hl%3Den My understanding is, TUV approved means "almost" as quiet as the factory one, not sure how much extra sound is allowed though. |

DJ, I just did the same thing with my 95 S2. Race header with a chopped down V&H. It does have a bit more bark than a stock V&H due to it's shorter length. The stock muffler is pretty full inside. There is 4 different tubes in there that would have to be cut and shortened. Brad |

The only reason I used the V&H muffler on the race header was to keep it the header from shaking itself apart. The the race header and stainless race muffler combination has a reputation for being fragile... I hope the lighter aluminum V&H muffler helps. |

My apologies for not reading the whole thread...But, I just saw that you wanted something quiet....The D&D I just got from them is freaking loud! I go to work @ 0430 and am worried I wake up the whole neighborhood...But I'm not changing it, because for some reason, after putting the race header on with that can, I don't have any oil coming out of the breathers anymore! |

Another big advantage to a stock-looking, or at least stock-sounding exhaust is the new laws about noise that are being bandied about. You can just about bet California will be at the cutting edge of state-mandated noise constraint/EPA enforcement. In fact the latest American Rider magazine says Denver just passed a law mandating all bikes have some kind of EPA mark on their muffler. I didn't even know there was on the stocker. Maybe a "TUV" marked muffler would be better than a "race-only" muffler. The Buell race muffer is clearly marked in all their literature as "off-road only", I don't know how convincing pleading ignorance would be. I don't want to be the test case either. |
