Ok - even though I am a pretty regular here, I did not realize that there was a "TPS Reset" section. Here are the posts for help in another section http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/287566.html?1182837751 So - with the American Sport Bike VDSTS (Technoresearch) Standard edition - how do I set idle speed? Also - for those with experience with this software - where did I screw up? Thanks! |

More on this. I figured out where I went wrong (I think). Some new (but I suspect related) issues: First, using the VDSTS tool immediately after connecting to the bike, I get a "Engine Problem" dialog box. When I open the dialog box, it does not give me any diagnostic code. Second, now the bike (when warm) runs great. But idling at warm up - will stall unless I help give it gas. Thoughts? |

Bigdog, Did you let it warm up to the specified temp (300 something) and then set the idle to about 1050? Don't go higher..... most like it a little lower it seems. Too low could cause some of what you are reporting. My idle does run erratic until warmed up a bit. Hope that helps a little. |

Yes I did. The idle never settled to a steady state - jumping from the high 900s to 1150. I adjusted it a little so it bounced primarily from 1050 to 1150 (but would COMMONLY dip to 950 or so and bounce to 1200 or more). Did I not let it warm up enough? Temp guage showed 320 while I was adjusting. I assumed it would bounce - but have no reference to what the range should be. |

Sounds like the temperature was ok. Do you remember what the number (voltage I think) was once you set your idle? I find the digital reading does jump around a lot. Sometimes the gauge may be easier. And you did back the idle screw off many many turns to be sure the throttle valve was completely closed and sticking a bit when opened before doing the reset. I ended up doing mine several times the first time until I thought I got it right. The process is really simple once you have done it a few times. I try to do mine with half tank of fuel or more. If my fuel is low the fuel pump runs a little more noisy to avoid this. Assuming there is nothing faulty, you may want to try raising or lowering the idle just a bit. I find if the idle is too high them strange things happen once it warms up. The rpm does not come down to idle when coming to a stop. It floats down slowly..... weird. Seems to do this more when temperature is cold. Dropping the idle a little makes this go away. If the idle is too low it seems unstable when cold. Yours sounds at the right setting but you might want to do the tps fresh and set is again. Do you have clean air filter? Oil levels correct and not overfilled. Checked and tightened the battery cable being sure the terminal screw is not bottoming out? Fuel tank and fuel pump in good shape. etc etc. Sorry for babbling on here... |

The latest version of the VDSTS SW does say there is an fault when it first loads, even if there isn't. But just click past that screen and all is fine. If there really was a fault, you'd see it in the fault display screen. So you've backed the throttle stop screw all the way off, and gently forced the throttle closed at the grip until opening it cause a slight sticking, and reset it there. And it still doesn't run right. I'm at home now, and my service manual is at work. But I was told that there is something the service manual that talks to throttle plate flutter or looseness or something like that. I'll look at it later when I'm at work. Al |

Thanks Al. It took me several attempts to find that part where there is a slight stick on the closed throttle. The TPS showed 0. I turned the throttle about 1/3 several times - most it showed was .1. So I figured I had it full closed. I gently forced the throttle closed and then started adjusting the throttle stop screw. |
