hey guys,i have synthetic oil in my 1998 s1wl now...dunno what brand is in!! i want to change filter and oil. stick to synthetic or use dino oil? and witch brand(weight) is the best for my buell with 11.000 miles? do i have to flush the whole engine going from synthetic to dino oil,and how to do that? thanks in advance, alfred} |

Just use synthetic, in my opinion it's better. But there are different opinions about that. My brand is Redline 20W50 full synthetic. Yes flush engine, with spark plugs detached, oil filter off and crank the engine several times so that the oil flushes out of the oil filter hole, don't forget to fill the oil tank regularly!! |

Flush the engine? God no! Or only if it drowned in the North Sea!!! Just drain the tank, replace the filter and fill it up with oil (~2 qts). Synthetic is better but dino oil is fine as well. Just make sure you use the proper API "C" grade (not sure what the equivalent is in your country - but it's compression (diesel) ignition oil) and visc. In other words, follow what the owners manual says... |

I use farm tractor / lawn mower oil. Jest keep it fresh, you'll be fine. |

SYN 3 in motor and Sport Trans. Don't like synthetics in Trans as I feel it's too thin. |

You'll get a thousand different opinions on this, that said I used to run only Mobile 1 20/50 Syn Now I'm running Amsoil 20/50 Syn for V Twins Hodakaguy |

I run Syn3 in everything. Stays cool, doesn't thin out too much, no noises or leaks. Drain/refill per factory specs (tank only). |

I know people will probably throw things at my head for this but I haven't ever had any issues with plain old castrol 20-50. 77,000 miles on the stock top end. I always just use the sport-trans fluid for the tranny. |

I have well over 300,000 miles on it and I've never had the valve covers off. I started out with the recommended 5w/30 and progressively moved up the viscosity scale to 20w/50. It has as much oil pressure as the day I drove it off the showroom floor. Apples and oranges, of course (please don't throw those at my head, as well). I had some Sport-trans fluid left over from years ago and decided not to let it go to waste. I can't tell a difference between it and the new stuff as far as the transmission/clutch action is concerned. Every time I hear people argue over the merits of this oil or that, it makes me wonder how we made it through the bad old days when only dino oil was available. I can still remember my dad swearing by Pennzoil for some reason. Were we doomed and just too happy to know it? |

I believe modern synthetic oils provide more protection than dino oil. They can certainly handle higher temps before breaking down which I think is significant in an air cooled engine, don't you? No one managed to get much over 120k miles in the good old days before rebuild time. Now even a Kia easily gets 100k. Better oil, low tension oil rings, and overdrive made a world of difference. hey,thanks all u guys for the opinions. after reading more over motoroils it looks like synthetic is the best choice for aircooled engine. what brand...dunno? redline,mobil one... i think both are good,maybe i'll find any testresults on the web. thanks, alf |

The more sensible choice would probably be the oil that is the most available. That's the only reason I use Mobil synthetic in my bike; it's available even in grocery stores. |

White_buell: http://www.amsoil.com/index.aspx sign up for the preferred customer and save some $$. Buy the filter too. The switch to Amsoil made by trans shifting seem like it was a different transmission, much smoother and lower effort. |
