Here's me and my 2003 Blast with a ton of mods. You can see the new GSXR steering dampener, the SECA II rear shock, and that I dropped my dual lights and flyscreen so that the top of the screen frames the top of the speedo. Oh... and new rear rubber too.        | |||

What do you think about my home made saddle bag mounts? This took a weekend of running back and forth to Menards for materials for the six designs that preceded this final design. I'm very happy with how it turned out.  With my other concepts I would have had to cut some plastic, this design goes around everything AND... it is somewhat height adjustable. It cost me about five bucks and about an hour of work once I settled on what I wanted. I was initially worried about it's weight "hanging" ability because I used 1/4 inch round stock and the design sort of cantilevers the weight out away from the mounting points, plus a lack of trust in the tabs welded under the blast seat. | |||

So far the design has "weathered the storm" well. Two weeks of commuting to work (38 mile round trip) and nothing has fallen off yet... in other words... they are still hanging in there.  The big test was hauling a case of Blue moon beer in them...... Please remember to divide the load equally... LOL.. I bet you thought I was going to say Please don't drink and ride! But ya don't do that either.. that would be bad. | |||

I do plan on adding some plastic to the sides against the mounts to make them a little more rigid and stop some of the droop. THE BEST PART.... no straps over the seat!  | |||

The hardest part was taking a deep breath and cutting the straps off of a new set of $100.00 Nelson Rigg saddlebags. I punched holes in what was left, wrapped them around the 1/4 inch rod and used zip ties (wire ties)to secure them. Ummm No... thinking about it... the hardest part was waiting for the paint to dry... If you look close you will see that I didn't! LOL!!!  I think my mounting system is very clever if I do say so myself. Most of the curves and bend radii were dictated by the profiles on my Craftsman bench vice. If anyone is interested in better pictures, dimensions, or a material list just fire me an email. I might even be persuaded into making a set for ya. | |||

J & P Cycles sells 2 steering dampers. The first part # 230-251 is the Pro-Flo unit for $49. 7 position adjustable and fits nicely on the Blast with or without a fork tube clamp. It is hard to get, but several places carry them (check stock and ask when they'll be in). Its actually a steering damper for a Kawasaki H2 (old 2 stroke triple) (see Badweb Blast racing section for info and pics). The other part #230-242 $80, is a V-Twin unit (V-Twin part# 24-0168). Looks like it will bolt up the same as the Pro-Flo unit but feels much stiffer when adjusted to heavy. I havent actually installed it yet though. One thing to consider is the damper bolts to a week (flexible) part of the frame that wasnt designed for a damper. Its conceivable that if a damper is too stiff and used regularly, it could fatigue the frame. I really have no idea if there is any real danger of frame fatigue. I just know on cars that installation of additional shocks, sway bars and steering stabilizers can cause damage to frames that werent designed for them. | |||

Slightly, but, no more than the stock outlet. It can't be seen from the pics, but, the stainless tip turns away from the tire at about a 30 degree angle from the centerline of the bike. (Message edited by ironken on August 31, 2007) | |||

What did you do to it when you had it apart? Any pictures of that? Have you noticed performance gains or loss? |
