What is a good oil to use for the break in of a new engine? Thanks Joe | ||

I have always used Royal Purple 20W50 in my bikes, run 50 miles, change oil and filter, run 500 miles and change oil and filter again and enjoy. I run the engine easy the first 200 miles and then turn her loose after that. Any good oil is fine, the first 50 miles are the most important. | ||

I kind of look for a rating like "SJ" or the likes that does have all the friction modifiers. I looking for an oil that will allow the motor to wear in during the first 500 miles. Thanks Joe | ||

Joe, any good oil will allow you to properly brake in your engine. Just change oil and filter at 50, run it 500 miles, then repeat oil and filter change. Remember K.I.S.S. (keep it simple simon). | ||

I've always heard a new engine should be broken in with dino oil instead of synthetic to help get the rings to seal (wear) against the cylinder wall. Not sure if this is the case anymore, but I can't see why it would hurt. If this is a new engine from the factory, just use the oil that came in it and follow the manufacturers recommendation. | ||

I broke my bike in on the Mobil Delvac 15w 40 Diesel Oil. I changed the factory oil at about 50 miles. With the Delvac, the bike ran pretty cool and now the bike doesn't really consume any oil at all. I also, broke her in on the hard side. | ||

Most people break in with the factory recommended API rating (NOTE THAT THEY REQUIRE "C", NOT "S" OILS!!!) non-synthetic oil. The reason for non-synthetic is to save money... since you drain the oil within a few hundred miles you don't want to waste expensive synthetic oil. |
