This is a request for a picture of your Buell tank/airbox lettering and logos. I need to finally do something about the funky, partially bubbled, partially non-existent Buell lettering on the left side of my 1996 S1 (strange - the right side still looks great!). Performed a board search and came up with many hits – although many of them not as definitive as this request. Please post both factory and custom applications – I saw that somebody had an American flag incorporated into the Buell lettering and I really like that – although I will not copy somebody’s custom application without first asking permission. Also – does anybody have a tip for removing the old lettering? Can I just carefully go along the outer edges with a razor blade without damaging the tank? Court – I saw in one of the search results - you commented that the Buell tank is NOT plastic – could you clue me in as to what it is so I know what to say to people?! I’ve been calling it a plastic tank for about 7 years now! AJE |

I had the same bubbling problem you did. I took the tank off and picked off most of the old stickers with an exacto knife. There were small remnants left that I took off quickly with an abrasive disk. Then I used 240 grit sandpaper to smooth. Finally I used scotchbright pads. I didnt spend alot of effort prepping for paint since I was going with flat black. I just made sure the surface was decently smooth. I made a Buell stencil with windows paint by finding fonts and graphics online and cropping them together. It came out good and was pretty cheap to do.

#m makes a rubber wheel that removes decals and leaves paint ask your local body shop. I have removed tons of pinstripes without damage. I think they call it a decal eraser. |

Johnnymceldoo - that flat black looks really cool and so does the lettering. Wardan123 – that Line-X looks really cool too – don’t have to worry about scratches on that thing! Mr1spd – I think the decal has some sort of clear-coat or something over it and the tank – I was going to start cutting around the edges of the lettering but figured I’d ask around on here first to see what others have done. I saw on somebody’s post a Buell Pegasus with a 3% incorporated into it – that I really like and would hope that whoever made this wouldn’t mind if I had it on my tank – if it would fit – I guess it would have to be pretty large to cover up the old lettering “footprint”. From what I can tell – the tank is a darker red underneath where the decals are coming up and I was hoping to do this without a paint job so . . . well – that’s why I’m looking for ideas! Thanks people! |

Factory white on one side, and Factory Black Chrome on the other. I love the black chrome!

I recall reading about an individual on this board who removed old lettering with a razor blade and applied new raised lettering in the lowered section left by removing the old decals... |

Oh, I'm not sure which model had the black chrome. I might still have the bag in the garage with the part number. |
