So it's the hottest day in Seattle memory and I'm doing a track day. Track temperatures were over 100 degrees. I've been trying to pass a Mille who pulls away in the straights but I catch in the corners. I've got a head of steam going coming out of turn seven and have just gotten my front wheel out front and I start to loose power. The engine goes off tune running really rough, all the warning lights come on and it's getting worse. I pull in the clutch and the motor dies. At home in the cool of my garage I switch the bike on. Turning the key on there is a pause then the neutral light and oil light come on, no check engine light. The needles sweep but there is no fuel pump buzz. Any suggestions where to start! |

I would check and see if the battery is fully charged. A dead stator could cause a lot of the symptoms you describe. |

The battery is at 12.8 volts, any other suggestions? Thanks! |

OK, that sounds like the battery is OK, meaning it wasn't a dead stator and a bled out battery causing the trouble. Check the battery connections while you are in there and make sure they are snug... without a battery "connected" the bike will run really badly (like you described). Check the fuses? Bump the bike in 5th gear with the key on... when the crank reaches a particular position in rotation, the fuel pump is triggered to turn on. You can actually use this to set the timing. It would be good to know if the fuel pump will ever run at all. I'm hoping others will chime in here with more specific instructions, these are fairly general things to check (but good things to eliminate). |

I tightened the battery connections, they were loose, and everything got a whole lot brighter. Once the check engine light cames on and went off I hit the starter button and got a sigle metal click from the area of the starter, then an electric buzzing sound from the dash area. I could not tell if it was from the ECM, relays or fuses. I turned the ignition switch off. It repeated the this sequence twice more. I turned it on a fourth time and got low lighting in the neutral and oil lamps, no engine trouble light and the buzzing in the gauge area was consistant. Replaced the battery and a dead relay and the bike runs good as new! Thanks Reepicheep |

Good news! Good find with the relay, I completely forgot about that. |
