One of my buddies is considering buying a used tuber. I've been one of the lucky few that have had zero problems with mine (of course I have less than 10,000 miles on it due to my 4 year break). I'm going to help him by going with him to look at different bikes. Are there any common problems that I should keep my eyes open for? Leaks in certain areas? Mounts cracking? Thanks for any advice!! |

Make sure to check the Front Isolator and Rear Isolator mounts.. The front is located above the metal engine mount (it attaches that mount to the frame), and the rear isolator is the rubber between the swingarm and the frame. There's more I'm sure, I'm a novice but just saw a guy at Homecoming have this problem, so check them. |

it depends on the year of the tuber. by 02, all the bugs were pretty well worked out. have had very little problem with the low before my daughter got hit on it. had over 23k miles on it. if your a little more specific on the year, you'd find out a lot more. either way i hope he get's a tuber. there great bikes. |

Nocompromise: The MOST FUN "Tube Frame BUELL" is the M2 . By now the COMMON PROBLEMS have all been corrected . LEAKS: If the lower rocker arm cover gaskets has not been up-dated to the lastest gasket, it will have to be done when they start leaking . PRODUCT IMPROVEMENTS: Clutch: The clutch SPRING PLATE should be removed and replaced with 2 friction disks and one steel other wise the spring plate will go bad at around 50k and take some of the clutch plates with it . The way you tell it is going bad is you can not keep the clutch adjusted. Clutch Cable: You need to drill a small hole in the clutch lever above the clutch cable end so you can lube the clutch cabe end . If you do not the end will break off . The clutch cable is very strong, "BUT" this is it's weak point . PREVENTIVE MAINTANCE: Primary Chain: Adjust it to 3/4 inch play on the tight spot . The FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL is wrong here . Drive Belt: Correct way to adjust is center the rear axle center, swing arm pivet point center, and countershaft sprocket center . On the tight spot(yes, belts have tight spots just like chains) adjust the Belt to ZERO PLAY(not tight) . Once you have set up the Belt correctly it will never have to be adjusted even if you put on a new Belt . "AND" last but not least change the Belt every 50K as some time shortly there after it will break !!! The FACTORY SERVICE MAUAL is also wrong on the Belt adjustment, also does not tell you how to set it up correctly . If you have any QUESTIONS feel free to ask ??? Ljenne73c@verizon.net Been on the side of the road(broke) twice in the 97K miles that "i" have on my 97S3T . 1st: Front motor mount broke which was a WARRANTY ISSUE, got a new motor mount . 2nd: Drive Belt broke at 61K as "i' was waiting to see how long the Belt would last . Thanks guys!! Right now he's thinking about a S1 (96-98). I know the older models have more than their share of problems, but I don't know what to look for when looking a bike over. Buellistic - awesome post! Those are some really helpful tips. Any other preventative maintenance tips would be GREAT! I'd like to make mine as 'bulletproof' as possible. It might seem counter-intuitive but I would suggest getting one with a few miles on it. most of my issues were worked out by 20000 miles. |

"The MOST FUN "Tube Frame BUELL" is the M2." Buellistic is a wise man with sage advice. He was the first person to ever give me advice on the BadWeb... almost 7 years ago. |

Check the cam cover gasket, and look for oil on the top of the motor that indicates a starter gasket leak. |

I would guess that when the 1125r comes out that there will be quite a few old ones come available. I am thinking that I may go for one but my wife will probably make me sell the S3 first. It has given me 62,000 almost trouble free miles. |
