When I Shift from 1st to 2nd gear, I get this skipping sensation. Somewhat like a 10 speed bike would when shifting between gears. The easier I ride the bike the more it jerks, and the more agressive I am, the less it does (but it still does every time). I've looked through the archives and didn't seem to find a heading that related to my situation. I haven't started tearing anything apart yet, just getting some ideas before hand. None of the techs in back have come across this yet. Thanks guys!

The bad news is that it's worn dogs on the 2nd gear pair. The good news is that you have a cartridge transmission that is fairly straightfoward to pull from the bike.

Closely check your 5th gear drive assembly while you have the transmission out, I think that is one of the things that leads to accelerated dog wear.

I also had a crappy tire (Dunlop D220) masquerade as this problem when a long strip of it peeled off down to the threads, but that does not sound like your case.

I have pictures of it in the knowledge vault, and Aaron had some good advice and discussions around the topic... do a search for "worn dogs".

In addition to the worn dogs you may have a dentent plate / clip that is off center. This is a VERY common problem. Replace the shift drum with one from Baker Drivetrain. Or send the entire tranny to Zippers and they'll rebuild and backcut your dogs for about $300!

If you're handy with tools you can do this job in about 4 hours. Of course, you do need the right tools! If you want to tackle the job yourself let us know and we'll get you a tool list. Otherwise have your local HD shop do it.

Thanks guys, I took the primary cover off last night but didn't get any further as I couldn't find my service manual. That Zipper's deal sounds pretty good. I'll give it the once over ahead of time to check for the visible stuff (trap door condition, fasteners, clips etc). I always tell people "as long as you're in this far, do this too." Are there any other things I should "improve" while I'm in there. Little things (I'm hoping I have the old detent plate so I can at least upgrade that). I've got 2 bikes and need to distribute the funds evenly, so no six speeds : p Again Thanks for the help!
