Wearing a helmet is great is if you fall (or plan to) for all other times its unnecessary. Even the great madatory helmet law state of Georgia (my home), shining star of the former Confederacy believes helmets are not needed at slow speeds and exempts riders in parades. Most of Daytona is a parade. | ||

Never use statistics to argue emotional issues, all it does is confuse people. For every component of a statistic there is an extenuating circumstance. And for every number there is a different way to calculate a different number from the same raw data depending on what you hope to prove or disprove ... and I can prove it.  | ||

Jmartz, That logic also applies to riding gear, all riding gear, as long as you don't fall or crash it does nothing but make you sweat and keeps the bugs off your skin. Along those lines, I read somewhere once that most bicycling fatalities happen at less than 15mph. I never plan to crash, but I do like to stack the survival odds in my favor if I can. I have ridden (rode?) a motorcycle without a helmet, but I've never crashed without one, so statistically helmets made me crash. | ||

They use to say on a TV ad back when seat belt use was still voluntary (it is a crime not to wear them in Ga, but a much lesser one than a helmet) that most accidents ccurred within 25 miles form home. At Daytona I'll be 500 miles away and well protected by that statistic. Seriously, I don't care what anybody does or even if the government feels compelled to instruct me on what it thinks is socially responsible. I just don't want to be a criminal if I choose to ride lidless. | ||

Yep, it sucks when freedom of choice makes one a criminal. Helmet laws and gun laws have a bunch in common, and both lead to somewhat heated debates. Have fun in Daytona. Post pics when you can. ps: it's a whole lot easier to mount a helmet cam when one wears a helmet. (sorry, couldn't resist)  | ||

It was not my intention to imply that thought about someone here propping up stats. For that I will now be humble and ask your forgiveness. Now propping up your bike with a helmet is another story. To emotional of a subject.....It should be my choice though. | ||

Propping up one's bike with one's helmet voids the warranty on the helmet and also has a tendency to chip the helmet paint. Not to mention that a helmet is too high to put under the kickstand and the bike will probably fall over also chipping the paint on the bike. Not a good situation in either case.  | ||

I would like to hear from someone from New Hampshire. There were 3 states with no helmet restrictions whatsoever, even minors could ride w/o a helmet. These were IL, CO and IA. NH, as I undestand it, had a law specifying that in the event of the elimination of federal requirents (highway safety act) the state's helmet law would cease to exist. Has this happened? PS I believe NH was also the only state not to have addressed the issue of mandatory seat belts in either primary or secondary offense status. Does this situation still persist? | ||

I hereby declare that I AM A PUSSY!!! Maine does not have a helmet law. I ALWAYS (well almost) wear my hemet. You see, I belong to that group of riders that HAVE crashed. I did a face plant on the asphalt. Had to buy a new helmet. WAAY cheaper, and much less painful than buying a new face. | ||

There's a really nasty photo over on the rotten dot com site that shows what happens when your face hits a car. This dude has no face from the bridge of his nonexistant nose to the back of his throat. His lower jaw has exploded. This is a common injury to helmetless and open face helmeted riders. There's another set of photos showing a helmetless corpse. He's fairly intact except for the mailbox slot in his forehead where his brain popped out. I can still get killed wearing a lid. I don't want my family to have to identify a pile of mush. | ||

That rottencom pic, if memory serves me correctly, was a screwed up suicide attempt with a shotgun, he lost his nerve at the last moment. So remember, when committing suicide with a shotgun, and then changing your mind at the last moment, not pulling the trigger works better than either flinching or wearing a helmet. I know a guy who got a facefull of another riders helmet when they collided on dirtbikes. He was lidless. The other rider (his brother) had an open faced helmet on. The guy was unrecogniseable, unconscious for a few days, and needed to have his facial structure fully reconstructed (which actually did the ugly bastard some good), and his bro just had a concussion. So, foam padding or hard surface?...hmmm...tough choice. I still think at low speeds, if I had the choice I'd take the risk. With the bicycle stats...the only people I've heard of dying at less than 15 mph were elderly. I know of a few people (myself included...a few times over) that've crashed bicycles at around 35 mph lidless...2 of those people running into stopped vehicles (not me!)...with only minor injuries. My only motorcycle get off (on the street) was at nearly 70mph...and I was glad to have a full faced lid on my head! So what does this all mean? The hell if I know. I need to get to bed...  | ||

Like they say - all statistics can be manipulated by those providing them, and usually are to prove a point and personal agenda. A good freind was killed when it started raining in the middle of a high speed corner in the famous Azusa Canyon set of twisties. His R-5 Yamaha (yes this was 30 years ago) slid out from under him as did the bikes of the 4 guys that he was riding with. The other four got up and had minor road rash. Bruce was a small guy and the weight of his Bell Star full face snapped his neck when he hit the guard rail. People used his fatality as a stat that helmets kill! It shows you how messed up some people are for their personal agendas. For the record I wore helmets long before Cali adopted a law that I think should be personal choice. Yes there are times that I would prefer to go lidless when on my Harley. In fact the beanie that I wear on it is probably more dangerous than no helmet. When on the Buell I wear an Arai Renegade full face cuz the way I ride it ups my chances of falling down. | ||

I live in Illinois where we have no helmet law. I do believe that it is the choice of the rider whether or not he wants to ride with or without a helmet. I must admit there are several times at which I do not want to wear my helmet and do not. These are usually reserved for evenings out where I plan on attending an event or going somewhere that I do not want helmethead upon entering (no highway riding involved). Usually very low speed, wide eyed, cruise to where I am going and then a return trip home in the same manner. My personal choice is to wear a helmet as often as possible. I probably wear it 90% of the time. Wearing a helmet is just the smart thing to do, but I can understand the want not to wear one on occasion. I think this is an issue of riders choice, I choose to wear one. | ||

Haven't posted in a while. Those of you who suggested I get a new helmet after six years will be happy to know I found one. It is a 450 dollar bell with graphics of tribal art and a tiger popping out of the front of it. That is my kind of cat... And I got it for 200 dollars from the Honda dealer because he could not sell it up here in butt-f nowhere Wisconsin.  Where in the hell is the little'cheesehead'smiley face? Charlotte | ||

Hey Charlotte, Good to hear from you. (Hope your at least sitting on the new M2L and making some Vrooom Vrooom noises in the garage.) If you ever need anything from down "South" (otherwise known as the greater Milwaukee area) where we have more shops with better selection, let me know. I come up to Eagle River every couple months.
