Found out today the previous owner boogered the threads in the oil tank, and now the "drain plug" is nothing but a bolt...and so are the threads in the tank. I'd like to have it right, mainly so I can snug the bolt down without smooshing the O-ring out; with the bolt I'm concerned about it backing out. I have to drill it when I get home tonight for safety wire... At any rate, I'm looking for an oil tank with an in-tact drain bung. Cosmetics, leaks, don't care...I just want something that can sacrifice its bung to me so the guys next door can graft it onto my (otherwise perfect) tank. | ||

You can heli coil the threads and save the tank.... I had to do it on one of mine with no problems... That drain plug is standard HD size/type & I have also heard there is a Harley self taping oversize drain plug available from V Twin.. Hope this helps. | ||

Yah, I got a new standard plug today, that's how I noticed the thread difference. I hadn't thought about an o/s plug though. When I get home (to my drain pan) I'll pop the bolt out and run a couple taps in there to see what size I need to step up to. We have the smallest mom-n-pop hardware store here in town - a real hole in the wall, but if you need ANY bolt, they've got one for $0.49. I love that place; I'm sure I can find something to work. Only hesitation is, if anyone else has to do an oil change on it and boogers/drops my "new" bolt down a drain. <shrug> Cross that one when we get to it, eh?  | ||
