I'm getting ready to do my steering head bearings and the service manual says to remove the lock. I can't get my lock to turn. I have the original key for the bike and several extras and none work. Is there a trick to getting this thing to turn. Thanks much for the help!! |

Remove the locking screw from the frame, take the key and insert it and un lock it if its loose you can remove the trees, If you want to remove it for service I believe that you must remove the stem(lower tree) to get it out. a shot of WD 40 will help too. Thanks for answering. The stupid thing doesn't turn I'll try lubing it. 55000 miles and I never used it. It does look like the previous owner did pry on it because the pain around it is chipped. |

Steve I replaced my bearings and races on the 99 S3 and never removed the lock. Joe |

you can still pull the tree, then remove it for cleaning and lubing (or plug the hole) as it's unlocked. |

When I did the 10,000 mi service on my X-1, I was able to remove the steering stem easily with out removing the fork lock. Just my experience, but I think you can skip that step. Getting the lower bearing off of the stem was my biggest hassle. Rest was easy. |

Thanks guys! I scoped out the section on the steering lock and everyone is correct. When I drop the triple tree to get at the bearings undo the set-screw and insert the key to twist the lock out. The manual doesn't say that the lock has to lock or unlock just use the key to twist the whole thing out. Thanks again for the help! I usually don't ask for help and it's nice to know that you guys are here. |
